Southdale Center Refresh Renew Renovate History of Development at Southdale Center •At 1.3 million square feet, Southdale Center is the first ever fully enclosed climate controlled shopping mall. It was opened to the public on October 8th, 1956. At that time, it had 64 specialty shops and housed two major department stores. •In 1970, Southdale had its first major expansion.
