Southdale Center Refresh Renew Renovate History of Development at Southdale Center •At 1.3 million square feet, Southdale Center is the first ever fully enclosed climate controlled shopping mall. It was opened to the public on October 8th, 1956. At that time, it had 64 specialty shops and housed two major department stores. •In 1970, Southdale had its first major expansion. It announced it would add a third department store, jcpenney, which is still in the mall today, as well as 43 specialty shops, a community auditorium and increased parking space. •In 1990 a renovation of the three anchors was completed and in 1991 the 3rd floor was unveiled as a new skylit wing of Southdale, housing 50 new specialty stores and a new food court. •The mall currently has 3 anchors: Macy’s, jcpenney and Herberger’s plus a 16- screen AMC movie theater and over 120 specialty stores and dining options. 2 Decision for Redevelopment and Plan •Mervyn’s closes in 2004. •Simon purchases Southdale Center in 2007. •Recession •Herberger’s builds out new concept store in 3rd anchor space which opens in September 2011. •Simon announces plans for Redevelopment of Southdale that will include: • Redesign of all mall entrances and updated outdoor signage and landscaping. • A brand new Dining Pavilion including new flooring, ceiling, lighting and seating. • A new Play Area in the jcpenney wing to enhance Southdale’s family-friendly environment and be the new home for Southdale’s Kidgits Club®, a fun and informative program that focuses on health, wellness, education, safety and entertainment for children ages 3-8. • New tile flooring installed throughout the entire mall. • Redesign of the malls’ common areas with upgraded ceiling, new finishes and lighting. • New paint throughout the mall. • Soft seating areas being added throughout the mall for customer comfort. • A redesigned and more efficient Guest Services area moved to a new location in the Macy’s wing. • Cosmetic upgrades to the texture and color palate of the entire property. • Redesign of railings. • New indoor signage to make finding retailers and restaurants easier. 3 Southdale Center Court – Prior to renovation 4 Southdale Center Court – Proposed Design 5 Southdale Center Court - After 6 Southdale Center Court – After (Night) 7 Changes to Center Court Bridge - After 8 Soft Seating - After 9 Old Elevators and New Elevators 10 Elevators - After 11 Restrooms - After 12 New Entrances - Proposed 13 Entrance 16 – Before and After 14 Entrance Lighting 15 Dining Pavilion/ Porte Cochere Entrance - Proposed 16 Porte Cochere Entrance - After 17 Children’s Play Area 18 Dining Pavilion 19 Dining Pavilion – (Night) 20 Dining Pavilion Skylight 21 Dining Pavilion – (Cont’d) 22 New Guest Services Booth 23 New Retailers 2012 24 New Retailers 2012 Cont’d 25 New Dining Options 26 Coming Soon - 2013 27 .
