A Level Wider Reading Enrichment List 2020 – 2021 As you make the jump from GCSEs to A Levels, it is important to develop an understanding of your subject that goes beyond the textbooks you are required to read. Wider reading can give you an advantage in exams by providing you with a wealth of knowledge that sets you apart from other candidates, opening your eyes to the views and opinions of subject specialists, and generally deepening your understanding of a topic area. Not only does engaging in wider reading support you in your A Level exams, but it is an essential practice that all universities will be looking for evidence of in your personal statements. When you apply to university or an apprenticeship next year, it is crucial that you demonstrate an eagerness to explore your chosen subject and prove that you are capable of balancing additional reading alongside your schoolwork. It is a good idea to start reading around your subjects early on in the term, so as to avoid the mad rush when UCAS comes along – aiming to read two or three books a month will provide you with an invaluable foundation of knowledge that will support you over the next two years. Below is a list of recommended reads by the UCGS subject departments to help you on your reading journey. Happy reading everyone!
