Objectives After completing the course, the student should be able to: l account for basic theories in general research fields within the humanities and the social sciences and their relevance for musicology, l on the basis of methodological considerations select, collect, process and analyse research material in relation to various research assignments, l account for some of the sub­fields within musicology, l write an independent project. Module 1 Theories and Methods, 7.5 credits After completing the course, the student should be able to: l account for basic theories in general research fields within the humanities and the social sciences and their relevance for musicology, l on the basis of methodological considerations select, collect, process and analyse research material in relation to various research assignments. Module 2 Individual Study Course, 7.5 credits After completing the course, the student should be able to: l account for some of the sub­fields within musicology (such as music theory, music history, ethnomusicology, music education and sociomusicology etc.) and methods used in these sub­fields, l apply relevant methods for information retrieval. Module 3 Independent Project, 15 credits After completing the course, the student should be able to: l write an independent academic project, l act as an opponent for an independent academic project. Content The course includes the following modules: Module 1 Theories and Methods 7.5 credits l an introduction to theories developed and applied in the humanities and the social sciences, and their relevance for research within musicology, l studies of methods in research within musicology, for example choice of research material, collecting, processing and analysing material, and approaches to different kinds of research assignments. Module 2 Individual Study Course 7.5 credits l in­depth studies of one or more sub­fields within musicology, chosen by the student in consultation with the examiner, l information retrieval. Module 3 Independent Project 15 credits l an independent project in musicology. Topic for the project is chosen by the student in consultation with the examiner. Type of Instruction Teaching is in the form of lectures, practical applications and seminars. Teaching is based on the students’ active participation, individually and in groups. All assignments in the course are compulsory. Examination The course is assessed with the grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG). In order to receive the grade of Pass, the intended learning outcomes must be achieved. The course is examined through oral and written assignments, individually and in groups. More details about the examination can be found in a study guide. Irrespective of the form of examination, the performance of the individual student is assessed and examined. A retake examination is provided within six weeks (within the framework of regular semesters). Course Evaluation At the end of the course, a course evaluation is conducted and compiled into a report, which is made available to students and filed and stored according to departmental regulations.
