UN1TED ONE FOR ALL HEROES ® uwsn.org United Way of Southern Nevada UN1TED ONE FOR ALL Dear Friends, On behalf of United Way of Southern Nevada, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your support. This past year marked the 60th year we’ve steadfastly pursued our mission to unite our community to improve people’s lives. Among the numerous ways we created positive change in Southern Nevada last year, we created our Community-Based Agenda, a road- map to improving lives focusing on early education, high school achievement, post-secondary attainment, and workforce supports. We also launched Community Connect, an online hub for local information; and with the support of countless individuals and organizations throughout our community, we supported children and families as they worked to build pathways out of poverty. While we celebrate the successes of 2017, we must also recognize the challenges and opportunities it presented to our community. In the wake of October 1, we saw Southern Nevada come together like never before to help those affected, their families and the brave first responders. It has been truly inspiring to experience how our community has united in the months following, and we stand ready to assist with future needs. As we celebrate our 60 year anniversary, we remain focused on our vision of creating a better community for all. We are fortunate to partner with tens of thousands of stakeholders – including individual volunteers, donors, nonprofits and companies – to make our community stronger. We look forward to working with you in the year to come. Sincerely, Scott Emerson Edward Garcia President and CEO Board Chair United Way of Southern Nevada United Way of Southern Nevada United Way of Southern Nevada HEROES | 1 Thanks to our supporters across the community, we have created many incredible results in the past year. Even as she speaks, she doesn’t stop playing with toys in her classroom. For children like Nahliyah, it’s about having fun. For United Way, it’s about creating possibilities for many of our community’s youngest people to attend prekindergarten. Nahliyah’s mother, Briana Williams, explains that prekindergarten would not have been a possibility for her daughter without United Way’s support. Williams went through a dark phase of “losing everything. My job. My apartment. It was very hard. Very rough…. I had to stop her (Nahliyah) from going to school because I couldn’t manage all of it at once.” She is now employed and Nahliyah is learning her numbers and alphabet in a high quality early education center. Williams can’t help shedding tears as she tells her story, but she also knows that life is improving for her daughter. She says that prekindergarten for Nahliyah was “everything I need. It was a blessing.” CREATING CHANGE: 445 CHILDREN RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND A HIGH-QUALITY EARLY EDUCATION PROGRAM. TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY “I became involved with United Way of Southern Nevada, as a donor and a member of the Board, when I moved to Las Vegas with my family nearly 30 years ago. Having experienced the unprecedented growth and its impact on our social infrastructure in Southern Nevada, I cannot imagine how we, as a community, would have coped without United Way and the supporters who made it possible.
