i U^U Ai **% '±\., a Head Coach Ray Nagel Ray Nagel is in his sixth year with the Redskins. In his five previous years Nagel compiled a 26-24-1 record, against some of the finest football opposition in the nation. Last year the Utes faced their toughest slate in the school's history and finished with a 4-5-1 mark. Utah is proud of its intersectional schedules and has met more of the national grid powers over the years than has any team in the mountain states area. This year shows more of the same with games slated against Oregon State, Army, California and Utah State. The Utes also meet Idaho and Colorado State and four teams from the rugged Western Con ference: Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona State and BYU who will all be top competition. The Ute mentor runs his team from a multiple "T" which has proven to be both effective and entertaining. Since Nagel has been at the helm the Redskins have set more than 20 new offensive marks. Nagel believes in developing all-around footballers who can go both ways effectively. The Ute defense is a real key to the club's overall success and the Redskin foes have come to respect Ray's team for their tenacious brand of blocking and tackling. Ray has a Business degree and a Law degree from UCLA. He lettered in football four years and made "All-Coast" honors. After graduation in 1950 he became freshman assistant coach at his alma mater and in 1951 moved up to varsity assistant. In 1953 Ray went to the Chicago Cardinals as a player-coach and in 1954 ws picked up as backfield coach at Oklahoma. In 1955 Nagel returned to UCLA as a backfield coach and served in this capacity three years before coming to Utah. Ray is married to the former Shirley Tanner and they have five children — Nancy, Bruce, Tommy, Ray and Scott. < Alternate Captain Mel Carpenter, Head Coach Ray Nagel, Captain Gary Herrzfeldt.
