CEPHALOSPORINS (Veterinary—Systemic) This monograph includes information on the following: Cefaclor; cephalexin, cephalothin, cephapirin, and cephradine. Cefadroxil; Cefazolin; Cefixime; Cefotaxime; Cefotetan; First-generation cephalosporins have the highest activity of the Cefoxitin; Cefpodoxime†; Ceftazidime; Ceftiofur; Cephalexin; cephalosporins against gram-positive bacteria, including most Cephalothin*; Cephapirin†; Cephradine†. Corynebacteria, Streptococci, and Staphylococci, particularly Staphylococcus aureus{R-3} and Staphylococcus intermedius.{R-32} Some commonly used brand names are: Cephalothin and cephapirin generally have the greatest activity For veterinary-labeled products— against staphylococci;{R-2} Staphylococcus epidermidis is only Cefa-Drops [Cefadroxil] Excenel RTU [Ceftiofur] variably susceptible to cephalexin and cefadroxil.{R-1} Excede [Ceftiofur] Naxcel [Ceftiofur] Rhodococcus equi, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and Excede for Swine Simplicef [Cefpodoxime] Enterococcus species are usually resistant.{R-1} The first- [Ceftiofur] generation cephalosporins have activity against gram-negative Excenel [Ceftiofur] bacteria, including some Actinobacillus, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pasteurella, For selected human-labeled products— Proteus mirabilis, and Salmonella; however, Actinobacter, Ancef [Cefazolin] Keflin [Cephalothin] Citrobacter, Enterobacter, indole-positive Proteus, and Apo-Cefaclor [Cefaclor] Keftab [Cephalexin] Pseudomonas are resistant.{R-1; 3; 4; 53} Many anaerobic bacteria are Apo-Cephalex Kefzol [Cefazolin] susceptible to these antibacterials, with the exception of beta- [Cephalexin] lactamase–producing Bacteroides{R-1; 4} and Clostridium Ceclor [Cefaclor] Mefoxin [Cefoxitin] difficile.{R-98} Cefadyl [Cephapirin] Novo-Lexin [Cephalexin] Second-generation cephalosporins include cefaclor, cefamandole, Cefotan [Cefotetan] Nu-Cephalex cefmetazole, cefonicid, cefotetan, cefoxitin, cefprozil, and [Cephalexin] cefuroxime.
