Task background: Prior to the 1973 edition, WMO publication No. 47 (1955-) was published and previously available only in paper form. Full use has been made of electronic data-processing techniques in the preparation of the list. In view of the large number of changes since the 1971 edition, the present edition is a complete replacement. The loose-leaf system has however been maintained and this will facilitat- the incorporation of future annual supplements. This edition contains two summary tables showing the participation of various countries in the WMO Voluntary Observing Ship Scheme (table on page 11) and providing some statistical data (table on page 111) on upper-air observation equipment, telecommunica- tion facilities and number or' radio operators on board.
