Lecture: The Central Maya Highlands of Guatemala: Kaminaljuyu, New Research and Results Dr. Bárbara Arroyo Friday, October 11, 2019 | UTSA Main Campus, BSE 2.102 | 3pm - 5pm Dr. Bárbara Arroyo Museo Popol Vuh Universidad Francisco Marroquín Kaminaljuyu is located in the central highlands of Barbara Arroyo (Vanderbilt University PhD 1994) is Guatemala in what is today Guatemala City. Its the director of the Kaminaljuyu Archaeological long history of occupation began around 800 BC Project and a Research Associate at the Museo and continued until AD 850 with cycles of rises Popol Vuh, Universidad Francisco Marroquín. She and declines but without being abandoned. has carried out research on the Pacific Coast and While Kaminaljuyu has had a long history of Maya highlands during the last 30 years including research, it has mostly been a product of salvage sites in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Her operations due to Guatemala City´s modern research interest focuses on the origins of growth. Recent research has integrated the sedentary villages, ceramics, social complexity, various rescue projects and carried out extensive and monumental sculpture. excavations that are enlarging our understanding of this important site with connections in the Maya She has published books and articles on aspects of Lowlands, central Mexican highlands, Pacific southern Mesoamerica and is the editor for the Coast, and beyond. This lecture will present Proceedings of the Simposio de Investigaciones results from the latest excavations, including new Arqueológicas en Guatemala. interpretations of Kaminaljuyu society and its relationship with other sites in the Maya area.
