Living in a new place, feeling rain, wind and sunshine there, marks your start. You will encounter different people and a culture that you have not met before. You will have the best time of your life. IPU New Zealand was established in the year of the 150th anniversary of New Zealand. It was the first fully residential private tertiary institute in the history of the country. The year 2020 will be the 30th anniversary of IPU New Zealand The establishment of IPU New Zealand was based on the ‘IPU Grand Scheme’. It was a concept of a place for young people in the Pacific-Rim countries to come and learn together in Aotearoa so that they could develop themselves as internationally minded individuals and leaders of future generations. At IPU New Zealand, students can find themselves becoming different from the person they used to be. Your time here will open up your potential. I am convinced of it. It is exciting, isn’t it? Your intellectual curiosity will be fully stimulated. You will gain knowledge through various experiences. You will open the door to your future. I sincerely wish you the best. Please be reminded, however, that difficult things do happen sometimes. When they happen to you, remember the word ‘resilience’. This is the ability to reclaim hope despite experiencing difficulties. At IPU, when problems occur, people encourage each other by saying, “Let’s not give up. Let’s not surrender,” and continue to take up challenges. There are four factors that help you become resilient and successful: 1. Interaction with adults whose role is important to you; 2. Effective use of time; 3. Positive self-image developed through encouragement; and 4. Positive self-expectation toward achievement. In combination, the above four factors make you more satisfied, goal-oriented, responsible, optimistic, higher in self-ex- pectation and better at using coping skills. Your development of such traits increases your resilience. To make yourself resilient and successful, both at IPU New Zealand and elsewhere, I suggest you think and plan ahead. For example, you should: • Write down what you need, what you are interested in, and what opportunities you may have. • State what results (goals) you want to achieve. • Clarify the difference between the results you want to achieve and what you can do now. • Identify what actions you should take in order to achieve your goals. • Define what resources you need. • Make a plan with stages and strategies. • Decide how you will evaluate your achievement. All IPU New Zealand staff are ready to fully support you with passion, sharing the collegiate life and learning with you. You have just stepped into a new chapter of your life. Keep moving toward your goals and do your best with great people around you. Wishing you all the best, Dr. Setsuko Ohashi President of IPU New Zealand 5 PALMERSTON NORTH & Just over THE MANAWATU AREA the bridge The Square 10 mins 5 mins 6 IPU STUDENT LIFE HANDBOOK PALMERSTON NORTH i-SITE There are a wide variety of events and activities happening in Palmerston North and the Manawatu area so make contact with i-Site Palmerston North to gain further information.
