INTRODUCTORY NOTE T he Cuidar O Futuro (Caring for the Future) Foundation houses the personal archive of Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo, its founder. Going as far back as the 1950s, it brings together documents illustrating the life journey of a remarkable woman, along with texts (and different versions of the same text) in the form of presentations, lectures, speeches and articles on the most varied of subjects given or published at different times and in different contexts in Portugal and abroad. T he originality and pioneering thinking expressed in these writings, the wide-ranging multidisciplinarity, the timeliness ingrained in many of its ideas and the boldness of the points of view defended therein led the Foundation to want to give them greater visibility and make them available to the public. This is how this anthology was born. Moreover it embodies a desire expressed by Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo herself before she died. Having established a timeframe, which consisted in giving priority to texts produced since the 1990s, our interest was also in preserving the broadness of theme which the archi- val texts reveal through the sheer range of topics covered, the diversity of contexts in which they were presented and circulated and the variety of languages used. From this perspective, and taking into account the interest of making different reading paths possible, we thought it useful to divide the texts into four main subject groups: Women, Equality, Parity Democracy; Democracy, Citizenship, Human Rights; Development, Population and Quality of Life; Education and Culture, Values, Religion, Ethics. When there was more than one version of the same text, we selected the most com- plete one – also giving preference to published versions (therefore revised by the author), when available. A thank you, on behalf of the Cuidar o Futuro Foundation to all the entities involved. The selected versions, here translated into English, are in Portuguese, French and English – showing the international reach of Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo’s thoughts and actions in all its linguistic diversity. In spite of a desire to be as true as possible to the original, we decided to open them up to common abbreviations and acronyms and to standardise emphatic forms by using italics. In the selected texts we find a diverse range of writing styles – sometimes colloquial, sometimes formal, sometimes poetic and in other cases explanatory and didactic. There are occasionally unidentified quotations, as well as concepts and examples that reappear in a number of texts. Nothing has been changed, as we accept that Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo’s 7 . profile was not that of a conventional academic. Far beyond an academic style, what matters is the potency of ideas that constitute the author’s persistent themes. We would like to point out how happy we were to do this work and we hope that this selection will effectively contribute to the consolidation of this new paradigm, a world based on care. In any case, there is still a lot of work to be done to the same end – and certainly much that can still be done to develop further the thinking of Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo and on the many unpublished texts in the archives of the Cuidar o Futuro Foundation. Compreender a presente compilação requer duas contextualizações. Uma, respeitante ao tempo. Outra, atinente à pessoa. O tempo em que se formou
