Match background • Those 2014 World Cup qualifying matches were the sides' only previous meetings. Mirko Vučinić (78) scored the only goal as Branko Brnović's Montenegro beat Ion Caras's men 1-0 in Chisinau on 22 March 2013, with the visitors' Milorad Peković (61) and Moldova's Alexandru Gaţcan both shown red cards. • Moldova had their revenge in the rematch in Podgorica on 15 October 2013; Stevan Jovetić (55p, 90+1) scored twice for the home side, but Alexandru Antoniuc (28, 89), Igor Armaş (62), Eugeniu Sidorenco (64) and Artur Ioniţă (73) struck to earn Moldova a 5-2 win. It was the most emphatic competitive away victory in their history and the only time they have scored more than four goals away from home. • The nations have met just once in UEFA's youth and age-group tournaments, Moldova winning 3-1 in a 2007 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying round match in Belgium. • The first three games between Moldovan and Montenegrin clubs in UEFA competition ended in draws, before FC Sheriff broke the deadlock in some style in the most recent encounter, winning 5-0 at FK Sutjeska in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg. 3 Montenegro - Moldova Monday 8 September 2014 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Gradski Stadion Podgorica, Podgorica Squad list Montenegro Current season Overall Qual. Played every game, scoring twice, and was named in the team of the tournament. • Left Budućnost in 1991 for Partizan, with whom he lifted back-to-back national titles and two domestic cups. Also established himself in the senior Yugoslavia side, and then Serbia and Montenegro's team, going on to win 27 caps in total. • Moved to Spain and spent six seasons with Espanyol, making 146 Liga appearances. Hung up his boots in 2000, yet six years later came out of retirement for a half-season cameo at Kom after Montenegro's independence from Serbia. • A member of Montenegro's coaching staff since February 2007, he began as Zoran Filipović's assistant before staying on in the same role under Zlatko Kranjčar. In September 2011, he replaced Kranjčar at the Montenegro helm and signed a two-year contract extension after 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying. He is one of only two Moldovan players to have featured in the Bundesliga. • Following the end of his playing career, Curteian held a number of administrative posts at Zimbru before taking to the dugout in 2007. He immediately guided them to Moldovan Cup success. • In 2009, he joined the Smena-Zenit coaching team and a year later became assistant to Moldova coach Gabi Balint. • Curteian started working with the Moldova U21s in October 2011 and his team finished third in their qualifying group for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
