Biographical / Historical The Art Association of Indianapolis is formally known as the John Herron Art Insitute. The Lieber family were known for their patronage of the arts in the mid-west, sponsoring artists, such as Theodore C. Steele. For nearly 100 years The family has operated H. Lieber Co., an art supply store and gallery in Indianapolis. During the later 19th century it served as a social and professional center for the Indiana art community, often exhibiting works by the Society of Western Artists. The Liebers were sponsors of such artists as Theodore C. Steele. Scope and Contents Correspondence, catalogs, photographs, and clippings; includes letters from Percy Ives, William P. Ware, J.H. Gest, Louis J. Millet, Otto Stark, Theodore C. Steele; a manuscript in the hand of William Forsyth [painter and educator from Indiana] on Greek sculpture; and business records of the Art Association of Indianapolis, Ind.
