Empowered lives. Resilient nations. SYRIA CRISIS AND RESILIENCE RESPONSE OF UNDP IN TURKEY : STRENGTHENING MUNICIPAL SERVICES In order to support Syrians, host communities and municipalities to better cope with and recover from the impact of displacement, UNDP promotes a resilience based development approach, complementing the humanitarian response by developing the “Syria Crisis Response and Resilience Programme”. The large number of Syrians staying in the Southeast Anatolia region of Turkey, is increasingly straining the capacities of local municipalities to provide the required basic services for the Syrians in addition to the needs of the host communities. Thus, strengthened municipal services and infrastructure are among the most pressing needs of the provinces that host high number of Syrians under Temporary Protection in Turkey. The provinces of Kilis, Hatay, Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa host more than 1.1 million Syrians. The ratio of Syrian population to that of host communities in each province is higher than 15%. As a result, the additional volume of waste generated due to unprecedented level of population increase with Syrian population inux amounts to more than 550,000 tons per year in Southeast Anatolia region. To help mitigate such excessive pressure on municipal UNDP commissioned a municipal infrastructure needs assessment and prioritization study for services particularly on solid waste management Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis and Şanlıurfa. The study provides the municipalities in these capacity in the region, UNDP Turkey has been provinces with better understanding of their needs and with tools to make more collaborating since 2015 with Disaster and Emergency strategic infrastructure decisions.
