Teacher Playbook—Promoting Ideation

REPRODUCIBLE Figure 6.8: Teacher Playbook—Promoting Ideation 1. Organize teams, identify the outcomes, and review formal team roles, expectations, guidelines, and norms. 2. Project a blank image of a tree with the personalized learning plan’s title written on the trunk. 3. Provide major category names so that teams can copy the tree organizer on chart paper and label the larger limbs with selections such as these: Supreme Court justices, on currency, cited in national or state education standards, African Americans, activists, Latinas, scientists, visual artists, musicians, or others the students brainstorm. 4. Explain how each team will research a woman who fits in a category and then add further branches to show her contributions. Each team will make and post its own map with four or more branches. 5. Brainstorm names of famous American women. (Encourage inclusion from all walks of life or focus on a single group, such as authors or athletes.) Prime the pump with examples from the following list. Maya Angelou Marsha P. Johnson Betsy Ross Joan Baez Dolley Madison Lakshmi Singh Margaret Cho Margaret Mead Sonya Sotomayor Tammy Duckworth Sandra Day O’Connor Harriet B. Stowe Amelia Earhart Annie Oakley Harriet Tubman Ruth Bader Ginsburg Michelle Obama Serena Williams Dolores Huerta Rosa Parks 7. Invite teams to complete maps (figure 6.9, page 134) for the selected person. After teams complete maps, create a new tree map showing the connections among the women that occur in addition to time and physical location. 8. As a follow-up, organize future investigations with outcomes connecting women to the times or places in which they lived. Invite teams to construct and illustrate a timeline based on what they discovered about American women in history. You can widen the focus to include women from any time period or from around the world. 9. Conclude with a reflection on creative thinking. Prompt with questions such as, “How did the map help you generate more ideas, make connections, or have new insights?” Personalized Deeper Learning © 2021 Solution Tree Press • SolutionTree.com Visit go.SolutionTree.com/instruction to download this page..
