What’s behind the tap? There are 7 key steps involved in the service cycle for GVW customers. Step 1 - Water Source 54 towns are serviced by GVW, with 48 of these provided with drinking water and associated services. Water for these 48 towns comes from a range of surface water sources. 52% are supplied by rivers and creeks such as the Goulburn, Broken and Murray Rivers and their tributaries. 25% are supplied with treated channel water. 21% are supplied by reservoirs or storages, which in turn are supplied by local rivers and streams. 2%, or one township, is supplied by a groundwater bore. This water is not safe to drink without treatment, as it contains contaminants such as bacteria and suspended solids like dirt and clay. A thorough treatment process is required to remove these impurities to ensure the water is safe for drinking, washing and food preparation purposes. Contaminants are found naturally in water and from a range of human activities. GVW’s drinking water supplies are managed to ensure water is safe for use long before it reaches your tap.
