At a school that deeply values iteration, process, and human-centered design, we enter this year eager to partner with our Founding Class students and families. We intend for students to play a central role in developing and upholding community agreements for how we behave and treat each other, and we’ve designed our schedule and calendar to allow that to happen. As we build the Mastery School of Hawken, we recognize this once in a generation opportunity to rethink high school from the ground up. In every aspect of the school, it is our intent to keep only the practices that are truly conducive to individual growth for each young person, and rethink the rest. With a keen awareness of the history of schools and their challenges in serving students well, we are deeply committed to building an inclusive culture where every student is known, heard, and valued and has the support to grow. In order for that growth to occur for each young person in a healthy way, schools and families need to work in partnership with mutual respect and understanding. We look forward to building and partnering with you throughout this first year.
