April 2017 Volume 9 Dundalk High School Issue 8 Newsletter Dear Dundalk Families: The third marking period ends 3/31/17. We encourage students to stay after school for tutoring and to make up all eligible assignments. Our number one goal at Dun- dalk High School is to reduce the number of failing marking period grades students receive so that all of our students will graduate college and career ready in four years. Kristin Anelli On April 5th, all 11th graders will take the SAT exam. Assistant Principals The county has designated the SAT exam as one of the tests that will measure College and Career Readiness (CCR) as necessitated by the Timothy Arrington Maryland College and Career Ready Act. Our students must score 500 on the critical reading portion of the SAT and 500 on the math portion for the CCR designation. Andrew Deming Students who do not meet this standard at the end of their 11th grade year will be Brett Molin required to take extra coursework their senior year to meet the requirements of the SB740/College Career Ready Act. Larissa Santos PTA President At Dundalk, our entire faculty has been working on providing our students with read- ing and math strategies that will help them on every exam they take: PARCC, H.S.A., Charles Sussan AP exams, and the SAT. This includes increasing rigor through text and test stamina. This faculty-wide effort of practice leading up to the exam will be crucial in helping students to prepare and succeed. As principal, I can assure you that your teen has the 1901 Delvale Ave. necessary coursework, teaching, and practice needed to do well on the SAT. Now, they must do their part. All enrolled students attending DHS are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch meal at NO CHARGE. There are no eligibility requirements. Breakfast is served from 7:15 to 7:45 am. Your student just needs to show up. There’s nothing to it! Late Students Effective Monday, January 30, stu- dents who arrive after 7:50 a.m. must check in at the DHS front lobby or office to get a pass. The doors on the Delvale Avenue side will no longer be open for late students after 7:50 and students MUST enter at the back entrance. Page 3 Student Service Learning Credit (SSL) 23 Members of the Class of 2017 Have NOT Met SSL Requirement Time is running out! The State of Maryland requires 75 hours of service learning credit in order to receive a high school diploma. Please check student report cards to see if your child’s Student Service Learning hours have been met. As of March 20, 2017, 23 members of the Class of 2017 have not met the state SSL requirements. Don’t let SSL hours keep your child from graduating on time with their classmates. Remember, hours need to be earned with nonprofit organizations (see page 5). SSL forms are always available in the library and the front office. Forms can be turned in at the library or to Ms. Cline in her mailbox. Page 4 Page 5 SPARC Academy The SPARC Academy is an innovative learning center here at Dundalk High School. The SPARC program is tailored to meet the personal needs and learning style of each student. Computer assisted instruction with one-on-one and small group sessions support the students’ learning. Personal attention is also provided by certified and specially trained teaching staff. When students complete their SPARC course, they will receive high school credit and be able to move on to an- other course if needed. Schedule During the school day from 7:45 to 2:15 After School Session 2:30 to 4:30 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday After School Program Any student may participate in the after school program to catch up on miss- ing credits or get ahead in class credits. The SPARC Program meets on Tues- day, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room 2142. If you have questions or are interested in the program please call 410.887.7298. Pilot for Blended Engineering & Technology High School Credit The Extended Day Learning Program (EDLP) is piloting a course ti- tled Engineering and Technology this semester from 6 to 10 p.m. at two EDLP campuses: Dundalk High School and Milford Mill Acade- my. This course has been reviewed and approved for the pilot by the Office of Career and Technology Education and fulfills the technology education credit requirement set forth by MSDE for all Maryland high school graduates. There is still space available for high school stu- dents to participate, with priority access given to students aspiring for a summer graduation. Interested students should see their grade level school counselor. Page 6 Page 7 Youth Leadership Academy The Baltimore County Police Department 11th Annual Youth Leadership Acad- emy (YLA) is scheduled for Monday, June 26, 2017, through Saturday, July 1, 2017. The academy is a weeklong program that runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The graduation ceremony is held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Classes will be held at various locations to accommodate the training being provided. Locations include the Police Training Academy and Martin State Airport. Applicants must be residents of Baltimore County between the ages of 14 to 18 and in good academic standing. In addition to the application form, each appli- cant must submit an essay about themselves and why they would like to partici- pate in the YLA Program. A waiver and consent form to participate must be signed by the applicant's parent or guardian. Applications will be accepted through Friday, May 19, 2017. Police Officer & Cadet Applications The Baltimore County Police Department is accepting applications for police of- ficer and police cadet. The department is in crucial need of cadet applicants. Staff are requested to pass this information on to individuals who are interested in a career in law enforcement. The information may be placed in the front of- fice, school counselor’s office, etc. Applications are completed online at www.joinbaltimorecountypd.com. Questions may be directed to the recruitment team at 410-887-5542. Page 8 Senior Prom It’s almost here! Senior Prom is scheduled for May 19, 2017 at Martin’s East. Prom attire must follow school dress guidelines as outlined in the student hand- book: http://www.bcps.org/system/handbooks/Student-Handbook.pdf In order to be eligible to go to Senior Prom, your student must: Pay all dues and outstanding obligations Attend school! If there are 18 or more absences for the year or any suspen- sions during second semester, he/she will not be eligible to attend prom.
