THE CAST: CAROLINE BELL – (Governess) - A graduate of George Brown Theatre School, Caroline is thrilled to be back working with her theatre family at SJTC and ARC who are creating incredible opportunities here in her hometown. Highlights include: creating her solo show Swing (Fundy Fringe 2020), playing Mary in the Maritime/European tour of Mary’s Wedding (ARC), I in Abyss (ARC), Helena in A Midsummer’s Night Dream (GBTS) and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (SJTC). She thanks her family for letting her monologue in the shower since kindergarten! * JESSE LAPOINTE (Man, Uncle, Mrs. Grose, Miles) - Jesse is an actor based in Toronto originally from Fredericton, NB. He is an avid reader, runner, and pandemic participant. Selected film and television credits include Murdoch Mysteries (CBC), Condor (CBS), and The Unseen (CFC). THE CREW: STEPHEN TOBIAS (Director) – Stephen is one of the founding members of the SJTC having been involved since its inception in 1990. As Executive Director he has overseen over 100 SJTC productions. As a director, Stephen has recently worked on: Mary’s Wedding, Romeo & Juliet, The Rocky Horror Show and Marco Polo: The Musical. As an actor, Stephen has been featured in Diary of Anne Frank, An Enemy of the People, Red, The Producers, Dracula, The Guys and Guys and Dolls. ANDREA EVANS (Set Designer) - Andrea has spent over 15 years working as a designer, scenic painter, and props builder. This is her first show with ARC, having worked for numerous theatres such as the Stratford Festival, Theatre New Brunswick, and the National Ballet of Canada. Andrea has also been a guest artist / instructor at the Etobicoke School of the Arts and the Rothesay Netherwood School, where she has worked teaching stagecraft and design to grades 9-12 students. She is also the recipient of a Dora Mavor Moore award for Outstanding Set Design. Andrea would like to thank Margaret for her constant love and support. ANTHONY ALLEN (Head Technician) - Some time ago, Anthony landed his dream job, and is now SJTC’s Head Technician. He has lost count of how many shows he’s been involved with, starting with driving screws in 2013 to managing two different productions in 2017. He is eternally grateful to the SJTC for helping him find his calling; and to his wonderful wife for supporting him while he makes his dream a reality. BRENDA MCLEESE (Costume Designer) – Brenda is a graduate of Dalhousie University, Costume Studies. Notable designs for SJTC include: Rocky Horror, Amadeus, Pride & Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, The War Bride and Miracle on 34th Street. Brenda has worked at Neptune Theatre, Centaur Theatre (Montreal) & TNB (1990 – present) and is on staff at Imperial Theatre. Brenda is also the owner operator of BJM Costumes, a costume rental house. BRIAN GOODWIN (Technical Director) - Brian spent 34 years working at Bell Aliant just so that he could retire and spend the rest of his days working in theatre. He started on this journey back when the Imperial Theatre reopened in 1994 and would like to thank his wife Linda for letting him be a part of the Saint John Theatre Company. DREW MURDOCK (Video Production Manager) - Drew is currently in his third year of university studying music and theatre. He is thrilled he can be bringing the joy of theatre into people’s homes during these difficult times. He is a member and/or alumnus of the Playwrights’ Center, the Dramatists Guild, the Writers Guild, and New Dramatists. Henry James - Henry James was born in New York City on April 15, 1843. His father insisted on a European education for his children, so throughout the 1850s the family traveled to Geneva, London, Paris, and Bonn, where the children were privately educated by tutors. They returned to America in 1860, and James attended Harvard Law School for a year. After dropping out, he contributed reviews, critical essays, and short stories to the “Nation,” the “North American Review,” the “Galaxy,” and the “Atlantic Monthly,” where he met editor William Dean Howells. His first short story, “A Tragedy of Error,” was published anonymously in 1864. From 1869 to 1876, James made several trips to Europe while continuing to publish his works, including his first novel “Watch and Ward,” in American magazines. During his travels he met such influential Europeans as William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin, George Eliot, Gustave Flaubert, Emile Zola, and Ivan Turgenev. He settled permanently in England in 1876, and over the next few years published short stories and essays as well as the novels “Roderick Hudson” (1876), “The American” (1877), “The Europeans” (1878), “Daisy Miller” (1879), “Washington Square” (1881), and “The Portrait of a Lady” (1881), many of which focused on the contrast between Americans and Europeans. During the 1880s and 1890s, he attempted to find success as a playwright while continuing to publish his novels, including “The Bostonians” (1886), “The Princess Casamassima” (1886), “The Aspern Papers” (1888), “The Spoils of Poynton” (1897), “What Maisie Knew” (1897), “The Turn of the Screw” (1898), and “The Awkward Age” (1899). In 1896, James moved from London to Lamb House in Rye, Sussex, where he published his last novels, “The Wings of the Dove” (1902), “The Ambassadors” (1903), “The Golden Bowl” (1904), and “The Outcry” (1911), as well as several short stories and essays. He also began writing his autobiography, which was published in two volumes, “A Small Boy and Others” (1913) and “Notes of a Son and Brother” (1914). He received honorary degrees from Harvard and Oxford, and on January 1, 1916, King George V awarded him the Order of Merit. James died in England on February 28, 1916.
