To me the "scary" parts came across as random and silly more than anything else, though I have to admit that the opening prologue, where a young boy finds his mom trapped inside a tree and screaming for help, was very well done. This beast starts off in with a lady in a tree view spoiler [with her nose ripped off and bleeding and she asks her own kid to get her out and, surprise, he does not hide spoiler ] because she's been pledged. But something evil is waiting for them in the woods just beyond town. Close your eyes. One letdown was the ever-changing time period and setting. I'm sorry, but I thought they were kind of lame. But as Charlie learns more about the Wytches and what is means to be pledged, he must decide who to save and who to sacrifice because pledged is pledged. They also call her "nervous" but she's not nervous. No other word to describe it. This book is great. I would only recommend this to those who are relatively new to horror fiction, but I am sure there are those who will adamantly disagree.
