Recycling one ton of paper: • Saves 4,100 kWh of energy • Saves 9 barrels (380 gallons) of oil • Saves 54 million BTUs of energy • Saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space • Saves 7,000 gallons of water and 17 trees • Saves 60 pounds of air pollutants being released Paper, all colors and staples are okay Junk mail and envelopes (windows okay) Catalogs, brochures and phone books File folders, milk and juice cartons Shredded paper (put in a plastic bag and tie securely) Paper grocery bags Books (paperback and hard cover) Be sure to remove the liner and all food from the box, flatten the box and place flattened box in a paper sack with your junk mail and mixed paper. Non-recyclable paper includes tissue, waxed and carbon paper. Do your best to remove cardboard, plastic and other contaminants from your paper pile. 4.5 million tons of office paper is thrown away each year in the United States. Enough office and writing paper is thrown away each year to build a 12-foot high wall of paper from Los Angeles to New York City. Annually, each person in the United States uses paper equivalent to 7 trees. Recycled paper saves 33% of the total energy needed for virgin paper. The average American uses 650 lbs. of paper per year equating to 85,000,000 tons. The average household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper each year, most is packaging and junk mail. The amount of wood and paper thrown away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years. Producing recycled white paper creates 74% less air pollution, 35% less water pollution, and 75% less processed energy than producing paper from virgin fibers. Recycle Montana, Inc. P.O.
