Dix, May 16, 1864, in an endorsement to which it is revealed that Sheffield deserted a second time. However the substitute stipulated by Lincoln having been provided, Sheffield's pardon was not revoked. State of New York County of Kings SS: On this 28th day of April 1864 personally appeared before me, Mary Sheffield of the City of Brooklyn in the County of Kings and State aforesaid who being by me duly sworn did depose and say that she is the wife of Alonzo Sheffield of said City of Brooklyn, that her husband the said Alonzo Sheffield enlisted in Company G. commanded by Capt Simms in the 51st Regiment of New York State Volunteers Col. Edward Ferrero, on or about the 21st day of August 1861 in the City of New York. That said Alonzo Sheffield enlisted while under the influence of liquor, and while so intoxicated as not to be responsible for his acts— That he remained with the said Regiment while in process of organization about two months when he left the said Regiment and returned to his business in said City— That said Regiment left the City of New York for the seat of war in the Autumn of 1861— That said Alonzo Sheffield received from said Regiment his outfit uniform only — and never received any pay or bounty from the Regiment, State or the United States— That said Sheffield has never concealed himself but has been pursuing his business daily and openly in this City until 1st of April instant when by an order from the Provost Marshal of the Second Congressional District of this State, he was arrested as a deserter and as this deponent is informed and believes he has been sent to the Camp of distribution at Alexandria— That said Sheffield is and for some time has been physically disabled and incapable of performing the duties of a soldier, and is and has been the sole support of his family— Mary Sheffield S Subscribed and sworn to by the said Mary Sheffield on the said 28th day of April 1864 before me— Theo.
