th th 6 and 7 grade GIRLS BASKETBALL Study Guide Basketball- a game played between two teams of five players. In which baskets are scored by shooting a ball through a netted hoop fixed above each end of the court. The height of the basketball rims are 10 feet above the floor. Point Value: Basket = 2 points Free Throw = 1 point TERMS: Bounce Pass - A pass which bounces on the floor one time before being caught. Best used if your defender has their arms up. Chest Pass- a pass in which the ball is quickly propelled from the chest by the hands and arms. Double Dribble- When a player dribbles with two hands or if they dribble a second time after they stop. Traveling- occurs when a player holding the ball moves one or both of his feet illegally. Most commonly, a player travels by illegally moving his or her pivot foot or taking three or more steps without dribbling the ball. Carrying- also referred to as palming, is a violation in the game of basketball. It occurs when the dribbling player continues to dribble after allowing the ball to come to rest in one or both hands. Dribbling – Head up, keep at waist level, use the finger pads only. Jump Ball - The beginning of the game starts with a jump ball. Lay Up - A shot taken in which the ball is laid against the backboard at a point just above the rim. Best used on a fast break. Shooter lifts the same leg to match the shooting hand. Man to Man Defense - A defense in which each player covers a certain offensive player at all times. Always position yourself between your man and the basket. Over and Back: Once a team has crossed over the mid-court line they may not go back over that line. Zone Defense - A defense system in which each player is assigned a certain area of the court to cover. Examples 2-1-2, 1-3-1, 3-2 only used in 7th grade P.E. 3 Second Rule - No offensive player may stay in the free throw lane longer than three seconds. 10 Second Rule – The offensive team must get the ball over the mid-court line within 10 seconds. 5 Second Rule – *All throw-ins have a 5 second time limit. * Once the dribbler picks up the ball and are guarded closely they have 5 seconds to pass it our shoot the ball. 28.5- The size of a women’s basketball. Women have smaller hands so ball is smaller for better ball control. REVISED 2014 .
