Alone while serving thee Can we in Freedom Dwell; O Author of all liberty – Our hearts’ rebellions quell. Glory to Christ the Lord, Forgiveness’ fountain’s spring; Whose blood is poured for their reward Who cause his Suffering. Lord Jesu set us free, Who with Thy cross are signed; Like Charles who pardon gave, may we Forgiveness give, and find. Glory the church shall sing To God the Holy Ghost, The heavens shall ring with glorying From all the martyr host. The church on earth replies, Grant us O Lord of Grace, Who share Thy martyr’s prayer, to rise With him to see Thy face. Glory for ever be To God the Three in One: O Unity in Trinity, When judgement is begun, When He shall come again From kingly throne above, Remember, Oh remember then Thy mercy and Thy love. (Tune: Diademata. Crown him with May Crowns) 3 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. Prayer of Preparation Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayers of Penitence The saints were faithful unto death and now dwell in the heavenly kingdom for ever. As we celebrate their joy, let us bring to the Lord our sins and weaknesses, and ask for his mercy. O King enthroned on high, filling the earth with your glory: holy is your name, Lord God almighty. In our sinfulness we cry to you to take our guilt away, and to cleanse our lips to speak your word, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4 Absolution May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria Thorne The Collect for King Charles King of kings and Lord of lords, whose faithful servant Charles prayed for those who persecuted him and died in the living hope of your eternal kingdom: grant us by your grace so to follow his example that we may love and bless our enemies, through the intercession of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Liturgy of the Word Readings A reading from the book of the Hebrews read by Nicola Thrussell Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had 5 promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. Hebrews 11. 1-2, 8-19 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Hymn 362 Glorious things of thee are spoken GLORIOUS things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He, whose word cannot be broken, Formed thee for His own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, Thou may'st smile at all thy foes. See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters, And all fear of want remove: Who can faint, while such a river Ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the giver, Never fails from age to age. 6 Saviour, if in Zion's city I, through grace, a member am, Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in Thy name: Fading is the sinner's pleasure, All his boasted pomp and show; Solid joys and lasting treasure None but Zion's children know. Gospel Reading Alleluia, alleluia. The one who endures to the end will be saved. Alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” Mark 4.35-41 This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon from David Thomson 7 The Creed Let us declare our faith in God. We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayers of Intercession led by Emma Kidd, Claire Driscoll and our children And at the end Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
