It is our pleasure to host the CSZ here on the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus, traditional territory of the Anishinaabe peoples and Metis nation homelands, during this our 140th anniversary. We are excited by the science on offer this week and the opportunity to showcase our campus and University. We have already seen two excellent days of science and camaraderie in a special satellite symposium honouring the legacy of Peter W. Hochachka held in advance of the main meeting. We are looking forward to even more great science and catching up with friends and colleagues from across Canada and around the world. We have been part of an exceptional team in the LOC and would particularly like to extend thanks to Jay Treberg, Jim Hare, Ken Jeffries and John Brubacher for putting the conference schedule together, David Deslauriers for the French translations, and Alex Quijada-Rodriguez for all student/pdf related organization. We also appreciate Joy Stacey’s extensive efforts in organizing and coordinating the education panel, ZET workshop, and the ZET lecture that will provide an excellent perspective on the value of citizen science to many of our research programs. Many others have contributed to the organization of this meeting and to them we are very grateful. If you see them wearing the tie dye shirt be sure to give them a nod of appreciation. Finally, none of this would have been possible without the extensive assistance and near daily emails with our Society Treasurer Keith Tierney; be sure to buy him the beverage of his choice as a thank you. Financial support for the conference was gratefully received from a variety of sources, not least the University of Manitoba VP Research and International office, Faculty of Science, Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, and Department of Biological Sciences. Research Manitoba were particularly generous in providing support for the conference, and thanks also go to the Company of Biologists for their generous support for student travel to this meeting as well as the satellite symposium in honour of Peter W. Hochachka. In closing we hope you have an enlightening and enjoyable week in Winnipeg.
