INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2000 - 0530 MDT NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL V CURRENT SITUATION: Dry lightning and very heavy initial attack activity occurred in Arizona, southern New Mexico, southern California, Nevada and Utah. Many of the new starts are unstaffed. Seventeen new large fires were reported in the Western and Eastern Great Basin, Northern Rockies, Southern California, and Southern Areas. An Area Command Team was mobilized to Northern Rockies Area. One Type I Incident Management Team was mobilized to Nevada, one was mobilized to the Eastern Great Basin Area and one was reassigned within the Northern Rockies Area. Containment goals were reached on three large fires. Numerous aircraft, equipment, crew and overhead resource orders are being processed by the National Interagency Coordination Center. All eleven western states are reporting very high to extreme fire danger indices. EASTERN GREAT BASIN AREA LARGE FIRES: Priorities are being established by the Great Basin Multi-Agency Coordinating Group based on information submitted via Wildfire Situation Analysis reports and Incident Status Summary (ICS-209) forms. LOGAN COMPLEX, Wasatch-Cache National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team (Carr) is assigned. This complex is comprised of the High Point (600 acres) and the Millville 2 (160 acres) fires, both located near Logan, UT. The Millville is a new fire that was ignited on 7/31 near the town of Millville. Helicopters are doing bucket work to support the suppression effort. OLDROYD COMPLEX, Fishlake National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Hutchinson) is assigned. This complex includes the Oldroyd, Mona West, Broad, Mourning Dove and Yance fires near Richfield, UT. Significant fire spread has occurred on the Oldroyd and Mona West. Both fires are spotting and jumping containment lines. Residences in communities of Oak City, Mammoth, Silver Springs and Eureka are threatened. Structure protection plans have been developed. WASATCH COMPLEX, Wasatch-Cache National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Dague) is assigned. This complex consists of the Oak Hill, Iron Mine Lake, Cottonwood, East Vivian and Wallsburg fires. All are located southeast of Salt Lake City, UT. The Oak Hill and East Vivian fires are both threatening structures. The Oak Hill is crowning in brush and timber. Helicopter bucket work has slowed spread on the ridgetop. Numerous fingers and reburn potential on the East Vivian fire are a major concern. EASTERN IDAHO COMPLEX, Upper Snake River District, Eastern Idaho Area, BLM. A Type I Incident Management Team (Humphrey) is assigned. This complex includes the following fires which have previously been reported separately: Coffee Point North, Flattop, Fisher Springs, Rattlesnake, Moonshine, Gentile Valley, Putnam, Tin Cup, Supon and West Fork. At least 11 new fires have been added to the complex, including the 120 acre Station Creek fire which temporarily forced the closure of Interstate 15, and the Camus Creek fire which burned 2000 acres. Two new fires remain unstaffed. The Moonshine fire has burned through retardant lines into extremely rugged terrain. CLEAR CREEK, Salmon-Challis National Forest. Two Type I Incident Management Teams (Hart and Bateman) are assigned. The fire is 12 miles west of Salmon, ID. The fire has made a major acreage increase on the southern perimeter. Spotting is occurring up to 1.5 miles ahead. Poor humidity recovery and hot, dry conditions are deterring containment efforts. Structures are threatened. BURGDORF JUNCTION, Payette National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Vail) is assigned. The fire is 23 miles north of McCall, ID. The 3rd Battalion 16th Field Artillery from Ft. Hood, Texas, commanded by LTC Daryl Williams, has arrived and will begin field training today. The fire’s growth has been minimal. Fire behavior is limited to isolated torching and short runs. JOHN ALLEN, Dixie National Forest. The fire is burning in ponderosa pine, fir and heavy ground fuels ten miles northwest of Escalante, UT. Cooler temperatures and cloud cover for the second day in a row are helping crews to make good progress toward containment. TWIN CREEK, Salmon-Challis National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Stam) is assigned. This fire is 30 miles north of Salmon, ID near the Lost Trail Ski Area. Numerous new lightning-caused fire starts in the area are causing problems. Resistance to control is high. The new fires are threatening structures and the community of Sula, Montana. State Highway 93 has been closed at Lost Trail Pass. Construction of containment lines is impeded by steep country, heavy fuel loading and hot, dry weather. BISMARK, Salt Lake Field Office, BLM. A Type I Incident Management Team (Hefner) is assigned. This fire is burning in grass, sagebrush, pinyon pine and juniper 15 miles south of Fairfield, UT. The fire is moving toward the Juab/Utah county line. One seasonal structure is threatened. Hot, dry conditions are hampering suppression efforts. BOULDER, Bridger-Teton National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team (Zimmerman) is assigned. This fire is 15 miles east of Jackson, WY, in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. The fire has made a major run, exhibiting long range spotting. Approximately 200 residents and campers have been evacuated from the Granite Creek Road area. BOX CANYON, Salt Lake District, BLM. The fire is 25 miles north of the Dugway Proving Grounds, UT. Three residences have been destroyed. Evacuations of several ranch buildings are underway and engines are protecting structures. GARDEN CREEK, Vernal Field Office, BLM. The fire is 25 miles northeast of Vernal, UT. Ignited by lightning, this fire ran actively, pushed by shifting winds until sunset. The plan is for crews to protect structures and begin building fireline on the east side today. NEBO CREEK, Uinta National Forest. This fire is burning in sagebrush, pinyon pine and juniper near Birdseye, UT. A campground and ten outbuildings are threatened. Priorities are being established by the Northern Rockies Multi-Agency Coordinating Group based on information submitted via Wildfire Situation Analysis reports and Incident Status Summary (ICS-209) forms. VALLEY COMPLEX, Bitterroot National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Frye) is assigned. This is a complex of fires that were ignited by lightning south of Hamilton, MT. Highway 93 is closed between Connor and Sula, due to fires on both sides of the road. Evacuations have been ordered for residents in the Warm Springs, Dickson, Robbins Gulch and Rye Creek drainages. CANYON FERRY COMPLEX, Helena National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Waterbury) and a Type II Incident Management Team (Hoff) are assigned. This complex, located 12 miles north of Helena, MT, consists of the Bucksnort Fire and the Cave Gulch Fire. The fire remains active in Magpie Creek and upper Hellgate Gulch. Crews continue building fireline on the northwest perimeter. Abandoned mine shafts are posing a safety hazard to firefighters. CROOKED, Clearwater National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team (Johnson) is assigned. The fire is burning in logging slash 50 miles southwest of Missoula, MT. The fire has spotted over Rock Creek and is less than two miles from Lolo Pass. Threatened resources include wildlife habitat, private timber land, Forest Service plantations, historic trails and buildings near Lolo Pass. COUGAR CREEK, Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team (Gauger) is assigned. The fire is 30 miles southwest of Philipsburg, MT. Small runs along the ridges have been observed, but fire activity has moderated due to higher relative humidity and shade from the smoke of new fires. UPPER MONTURE COMPLEX, Lolo National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Bennett) is assigned. This complex is 34 miles northeast of Missoula. Problems include lack of road access to the fires, extremely dry fuels and intense fire behavior. This fire is being managed in conjunction with the Spread Ridge fire. SPREAD RIDGE, Lolo National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team (Specht) is assigned. This fire is 19 miles east of Seeley Lake, MT. Crews are clearing an indirect fireline in conjunction with the Upper Monture fire. The fire has burned actively until midnight. Thunderstorms have occurred in the fire area, along with scattered very light precipitation. FORT HOWES COMPLEX, Miles City Field Office, BLM. A Type II Incident Management Team (Colla) is assigned. This complex consists of the Stag Butte fire, Taylor Butte fire and others south of Ashland, MT.
