Above right (©Juan Carlos Toro/IOM Iraq 2017): Families at the Qayara Airstrip Emergency Site have access to medical facilities, thanks to the assistance of UK - DFID. Over the reporting period, 16,395 medical consultations were carried out by IOM in camps and emergency sites in Erbil, Kirkuk, Ninewa and Salah al-Din with the support of several partners. Above (©Sandra Black/IOM Iraq 2017): With assistance from the Government of Kuwait, 6,445 kerosene kits were distributed to displaced Iraqi families in Haj Ali and Qayara Airstrip Emergency Sites. Kerosene is critical to keep cooking stoves and heaters working through cold nighttime temperatures, which often drop below freezing. The school had no access to water, electricity, or sani- tation facilities; it was full of garbage and Hussein and his family had to rely on neighbors to access bathrooms and showers. With the support of the European Union’s Humanitar- ian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO), IOM assisted the families with a range of services, including providing access to electricity, hot water, water tanks, sanitation, doors and windows. In addition to site ren- ovations and upgrades, the families have also received blankets, mattresses and heaters. Families previously lived together in classrooms; IOM installed wooden partitions to provide them with sep- arate private spaces. “Each family now has privacy,” said Hussein’s father.
