Future of Health Research Funding at Department of Defense

Future of Health Research Funding at Department of Defense National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2017 • NDAA of 2017: Contains Language to Eliminate Health Research Programs – Would cut ovarian cancer research program – Would cut all cancer research programs – Would cut most other health research programs • SGO opposes Sections 756 and 898 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017 (NDAA) S. 2943 and we support amendments to strike this language from the bill. Ask your Patients & Family Groups to Take Action • Ask your patients, their family members, and local patient advocacy organizations that you know to visit the OCNA website – http://cqrcengage.com/ovarian/ to contact their Senators. • Once on the website, they will click, “Take Action,” to send an message to their Senators to Protect Ovarian Cancer Research at the Department of Defense Contact your Senators by Phone • Call the Senate Switchboard @ 202-224-3121, then ask for the Senator’s office. • Once connected, ask for the staffer that works on Healthcare Issues for the Senator. • Tell them: – Who you are and where you live. – Let them know that you oppose language in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017, S. 2943, specifically Sections 756 and 898 because that language could be used to eliminate all medical research by the Department of Defense, specifically cancer research programs, including a research program for ovarian cancer. – Ask that the Senator co-sponsor Senate Amendment 4369, being offered by Senators Durbin and Cochran and also co-sponsored by Senators Reid, Blunt, Mikulski, Murkowski, Feinstein, Collins, Murray, Casey, Gillibrand and Shelby to strike this language from the bill. Have them communicate their co-sponsorship to Senators Durbin and Cochran’s staff ASAP. – If your Senator is already a co-sponsor, please thank the staff for their boss’ support and urge their boss to talk with other Senate colleagues asking them to become co-sponsors as well. • CALL BOTH of YOUR STATE’s SENATORS!!!!
