St Martins-Milford World War I Casualty Biographies This memorial plaque to WW1 is in St Martin’s Church, Milford. There over a 100 listed names due to the fact that St Martin’s church had one of the largest congregations at that time. The names have been listed as they are on the memorial but some of the dates on the memorial are not correct. Sapper Edward John Ezard B Coy, Signal Corps, Royal Engineers- Son of Mr. and Mrs. J Ezard of Manchester- Husband of Priscilla Ezard, 32, Newton Cottages, The Friary, Salisbury- Father of 1 and 5 year old- Born in Lancashire in 1883- Died in hospital 24th August 1914 after being crushed by a lorry. Buried in Bavay Communal Cemetery, France (12 graves) South Part. Private George Hawkins 1st Battalion Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry- Son of George and Caroline Hawkins, 21 Trinity Street, Salisbury- Born in 1887 in Shrewton- He was part of the famous Mon’s retreat- His body was never found- Died on 21st October 1914. (818 died on that day). Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 19. Private Reginald William Liversidge 1st Dorsetshire Regiment- Son of George and Ellen Liversidge of 55, Culver Street, Salisbury- Born in 1892 in Salisbury- He was killed during the La Bassee/Armentieres battles- His body was never found- Died on 22nd October 1914 Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 22. Corporal Thomas James Gascoigne Shoeing Smith, 70th Battery Royal Field Artillery- Husband of Edith Ellen Gascoigne, 54 Barnard Street, Salisbury- Born in Croydon in 1887-Died on wounds on 30th September 1914. Buried in St Nazaire Toutes Aides Cemetery, France. Plot D 57. Private William Stevens 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment- Husband of Betty Louisa Stevens of 52, Waterloo Gardens, Salisbury- Born in Bishopstone, Wiltshire in 1883-Died 21st September 1914. Buried in Braine Communal Cemetery, France. A10 Special Memorial 1915 Private Albert (S confused with his brother Alfred S) Edwin Mortimer 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment- Son of Edward and Eliza Mortimer of 53, Culver Street, Salisbury- Born in 1888 in Salisbury- Died in the trenches at Pont de la Justice, France on 15th January 1915. Buried in Rue David Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France. Plot 1G 29 Rifleman Oliver William Chapman 2nd Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps-Son of Henry and Louisa Chapman of 91 Culver Street, Salisbury- Born in Sandown, Isle of Wight in 1897-Died on 10th January 1915. Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 32/33 Corporal William Finlay Partridge Royal Army Medical Corps- Husband of M E Partridge of 52 Barnard Street, Salisbury- Killed in action by shelling whilst recovering unit’s equipment from Bethune- Born Derbyshire in 1879-Died 25th January 1915. Buried in Chocques Military Cemetery, France. Plot 1A 1 Lance Corporal Cecil George Sandbrook Rawlings 12th London Battalion, The Rangers- Eldest son of George and Ida Rawlings of Rosemount, Milford-His family owned a business in Salisbury.-Born in Salisbury in 1895- Educated at Godolphin Kindergarten- He was killed in action just east of Ypres when a shell exploded in the trench- He died 15th February 1915. Buried in Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 11B 1/3 Private Frederick Massey 1st Wiltshire Battalion- Son of Edward and Annie Massey of St Martins Street, Salisbury- Born in Salisbury in 1892- Killed in action on 30th March 1915. Buried in Voormezeele Enclosure Cemetery No 3, Belgium. Plot 1V B1. Private George Gray Royal Army Service Corp-.Husband of Annie Laura Gray, 59, The Friary, Salisbury- Born in Salisbury in 1882- Died at home of a painful illness on 21st March 1915- He was a father of 5 children. Buried in London Road Cemetery, Salisbury. Plot P 661. Private Alfred Morris 1st Royal Dragoons-Son of James and Emily Morris of 14 Albert Place, The Friary, Salisbury-Born in Pitton in 1886 -Killed in the trenches near Hooge on 2nd June 1915. Commemorated on Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium. Panel 5. Private Sidney William Jack Pitman 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment-Son of Sidney and Emma Louisa Pitman of 39, Rampart Road, Salisbury- Born in Salisbury in 1895- He was leading a section against the German trenches at Givenchy; when he was struck by shrapnel and died almost immediately on 15th June 1915. Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France Panel 33/34. Lance Corporal James Cull Military Police- Born Gussage All Saints, Dorset- Husband of Elizabeth Cull 19, Clarendon Road, Salisbury- Born in 1880 in Salisbury-Died at Military Isolation Hospital, Aldershot on 10th August 1915. Buried in London Road Cemetery, Salisbury, Plot O 378. Private Albert William Jeans 6th Battalion Leinster Regiment- Son of George and Fanny Jeans of 110, Milford Hill, Salisbury- Husband of Edith Emma Jeans of Lower Woodford- Born in 1886 in Alderbury- Killed in action defending Rhodendron Spur, Gallipoli on 10th August 1915. Commemorated on Helles Memorial, Turkey, Panel 184/185. Private Charles Cobb 5th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment. Son of Frank and Ellen Elizabeth Cobb of 105, Culver Street, Salisbury. Born in 1897 in Salisbury. Killed in action at the Battle of Sari Bair 10th August 1915. Commemorated on Helles Memorial, Turkey. BC.- Born in 1874 in British Columbia- Died in 2nd Battle of Ypres at St Julien on 24th April 1915. Commemorated on Menin Gate Memorial, Panel 24/30 Ypres, Belgium. 1916 Private George A Sennett 5th Connaught Rangers (Part of the new Kitchener’s Army)- Son of Alfred and Laura Ann Sennett of Joiners Hall, St Anne Street, Salisbury- Born in 1889 in Salisbury- Died of his wounds on 17th January 1916. Commemorated on Dorian Memorial, Greece. East Face. Column 1 Private Charles Frederick Bunsell 2nd Wiltshire Regiment- Son of George and Elizabeth Jane Bunsell of 6, Park Terrace, The Friary, Salisbury- Born in 1896 in Salisbury- Died in action from numerous shrapnel wounds on 4th February 1916. Buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery, France. Plot 1D 36. Sapper Charles Harry Robinson Royal Engineers 90th Field Company- Husband of Susan Robinson 9, Clifton Row, West Street, Salisbury- Born in 1879 in Alderbury-Died of wounds on 4th April 1916. Buried in London Rifle Brigade Cemetery Belgium. Plot 2B8. Seaman Kenneth Alder Royal Navy-Son of Isaac John and Flora Thirza Alder of 24, St Martins Church Street, Salisbury- Born in 1898 in Salisbury- He was aboard the Indefatigable when it was sunk during the Battle of Jutland and died on 31st May 1916, along with 1017 others who were on board that day. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Panel 12. Private (Henry) George Elliott Royal Marines Light Infantry- Son of Harriet Elliott of Exeter Street, Salisbury- Born in 1897 in Salisbury- He was aboard HMS Black Prince when it was sunk during the Battle of Jutland and died on 31st May 1916, along with 857 who were on board that day. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval War Memorial Panel 22. Private Walter John Sanger 1st Wiltshire Regiment- Husband of Mable Sanger of 15a, Gigant Street, Salisbury.- Born in 1888 in Fittleton, Wiltshire- Killed in action on the Leipzig Salient as the result of high explosive bombardment on 7th July 1916. Buried in AIF Cemetery, Flers, France. Plot 15 E7. Sergeant William Frank Welsh 1st Wiltshire Regiment- Son of William and Sarah Anne Welsh of 103, Culver Street, Salisbury- Born in 1894 in Redbourne, Wiltshire- Killed in action in the trenches on the Leipzig Salient on 6th July 1916. Buried in Lonsdale Cemetery, France. Plot 3 F7. Private Edgar Percy Rousell Duke of Cambridge’s Own 1st Middlesex- Son of William James Rousell of 66, St Mark’s Road, Salisbury- Born in 1896 in Salisbury- Killed in action SE of Pozieres and died 15th July 1916. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Panel, France. Panel 12D/13B Leading Seaman Francis Henry Jolliffe Royal Navy.-Son of Frederick William and Eliza Jane Jolliffe of 8 Park Terrace, The Friary, Salisbury- Born in 1884 in Salisbury- He was aboard submarine E4 when it was sunk in collision with submarine E41 just off Harwich and died 15th August 1916.
