Marsh Brigade Tactical Officer 3 The West Point Association of Graduates congratulates all families on the graduation of your Cadets from the United States Military Academy! They are now members of the Long Gray Line, joining the ranks of more than 54,000 living West Point graduates who forge strong, enduring bonds among themselves and with their alma mater. We stand ready to provide a lifetime of support to each graduate at every stage of their alumni experience through an extensive range of services such as providing news, information and resources that keep them connected to each other and to West Point; planning and organizing reunions; offering transition assistance and much more. We celebrate with you today, proud of the young men and women about to embark on service to our nation, and we welcome them with open arms into the Long Gray Line. Fifty-Year Affiliation Program The Class of 1971, the 50 Year Affiliate Class, has developed a special relationship with the Class of 2021. Since the summer of 2016, members of the Class of 1971 have engaged with and supported the Class of 2021 from the Prep School to R-Day and every step along the way to Graduation. The Cadet phase of bonding and mentorship between these two classes culminates today when the Class of 1971 presents a set of Second Lieutenant bars engraved with “71-21” to each graduate. The four representatives of the Class of 1971 presenting the bars are: Lieutenant Colonel Thomas E. Mannle Jr., U.S. Army Reserve Retired; Class President Lieutenant Colonel Michael G. Ritchie, U.S. Army Retired; Senior Executive Service Retired Colonel Johnny W. Brooks, U.S. Army Retired; Class Historian Mr. George H. Gilmore Jr.; Former WPAOG Director 4 UNITED STATES CORPS OF CADETS CLASS OF 2021 CREST The 50 Year Affiliate Class, 1971, was part of the inspiration for the design behind the crest. The simple yet timeless design of the Class of ‘71 crest is represented in the design of 2021’s crest. In addition, the horizontal banner that contains the motto ‘Until the Battle is Won’ is reflective of the horizontal banner in the 1971 Crest. The Class of 2021 is the first class to have Davis Barracks in photographs of West Point. Davis Barracks was named after General Benjamin O. Davis Jr., who graduated from West Point in 1936. To honor his legacy, on the head of the eagle there are 36 distinct feathers to represent Davis’s graduation year. Throughout the extensive design process, Cadets expressed their desire to include elements of the crest that related back to the events of 9/11. The Class of 2021 will graduate twenty years after 9/11. On the crest 9 stars and 11 stripes are displayed on the flag. Included in the hilt of the Cadet Saber, there are 17 lines that represent the 17 different branches of the Army that Cadets will have the privilege to join upon graduation. 5 THE CORPS The Corps! The Corps! The Corps! The Corps, bareheaded salute it. With eyes up, thanking our God That we of the Corps are treading Where they of the Corps have trod. They are here in ghostly assemblage, The ranks of the Corps long dead, And our hearts are standing attention, While we wait for their passing tread. The Corps of today, we salute you, The Corps of an earlier day. We follow, close order, behind you, Where you have pointed the way; The long gray line of us stretches Thro’ the years of a cent’ry told, And the last one feels to the marrow The grip of your far off hold. Grip hands with us now though we see not, Grip hands with us, strengthen our hearts As the long line stiffens and straightens With the thrill that your presence imparts. Grip hands, tho’ it be from the shadows While we swear, as you did of yore, Or living, or dying to honor The Corps, and the Corps, and the Corps. 6 CLASS OF 2021 Valedictorian Justin Michael Gittemeier Cadet First Captain and Brigade Commander Reilly M.
