POPULATION AND HOUSING • I - CENSUS OFJ PAKISTAN •• • r:..f 1998 • C!Census 1Bulletin-4 FORE We> RD The Fifth P(}pulation and Housing Census was undertaken from 2nd to 18th March, 1998 throughout the country. For this purpose, the whole country was delimited into manageable census areas i.e., blocks, circles, charges and districts. Maps of all these census areas were prepared arid supplied to the field staff to ensure full coverage. The field staff engaged from the Provincial Government Departments were imparted thorough training before the census operation. To monitor field operation, control rooms at census district/taluka levels were estab lished. Close supervision of census work through verification process by the supervisors was also laid down . A massive public awareness programme was launched to build confidence and to educate the people about the census procedures and its importance through electronic and print media. The provisional results of the 1998 Census have already been released in the form of Bulletin-I by the Federal Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs & Statistics in a press conference held on 8th July, 1998. This bulletin presents provisional figu res at provincial level with further breakdown to division. district and Taluka level . The population of each Municipal Corporation, Munjcipal Committee, Town Committee and Cantonmenl has also been given under the respective Taluka. According to these results the population of Sindh Province is 29. 991 million as against 19.029 million in 1981 showing an overall percentage in crease of 57.6. It constitutes 23.0 petcent of the total population of Pakistan, which has slightly increased from 22.6 percent in 1981. The population of this province has increased at an average annual growth rate of 2.71 percent as compared to the national average of 2.61 percent. There is a modest decline in the growth rate of Sindh which has come down from 3 .56 percent in 198 1 to 2. 71 percent in 1998. The population of this province since 195 I is given as under : Year Population 195 1 6.054,474 1961 8.374,032 1972 14. 158,279 1981 19.028,666 1998 29.991,161 2 The population density i.e., persons per sq. kilometer has increased to 212.8 persons per sq. kilometer as c:ompared to 135. 0 in 198 l. Sindh is the most urbanized province where 48. 9 percent of the total population live in cities/towns. Karachi is the biggest city of Sindh with the population of 9.269 million followed by Hyderabad ( 1. 151 million) and Sukkur (0.329 million). These three major cities account for 73 .3 percent of total urban population and 35.8 percent of the total population of Sindh. The Census is a gigantic exercise of immense national importance. All concerned Ministries/Divisions and the Provincial Government played a vital role and fully cooperated in carrying out this important national task in a smooth manner. It has been a matter of great satisfaction that no serious complaints were recorded during the operation. Some minor complaints were however received which were resolved locally. The Armed Forces supported the Population and Housing Census work on hundred percent basis. They maintained a close liaison with the civil set up at all levels by establishing census support centres at Province, Division, District , Tehsil and lowe_r leyel. I extend my gratitude ~o all the Armed Forces and their officers/staff involved in this exercise. The most arduous work of enumeration was done by the enumerators and their supervi sors. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to all those who worked to make the Population and Housing Census 1998 a success. Finally I thank the officers and staff members of the Population Census Organization for their relentless efforts to complcte ..thc census successfully. The figures given in the following table are provisional and subject to change after processing of individual census returns in the coming months.
