Basic Bookbinding Structures Workshop

Evelyn Wong [email protected] • www.evelynwongartist.com Workshop: Basic Bookbinding Structures Description Bookbinding has a rich history from its early usage in religious texts to contemporary forms of visual storytelling. Experimentations with paper and other materials has led to developments in paper engineering in pop-up books, unconventional book forms, and other contemporary methods of visual narratives. This workshop will give an introduction to some basic book structures that will give participants ideas to develop their own bound-book (and beyond!) projects. Expected Time 3 hours Projects Accordion Books The accordion book is a fun and easy structure to learn for all ages! This structure will help you learn to think about panoramic imagery and how it can be broken up into multiple pages to form a more “conventional-looking” book. Pamphlet Binding The pamphlet stitch, or pamphlet-binding, is one of the most basic structures in Western bookbinding, and forms the basis for understanding many bound books. Casebound Books The codex is the most easily-recognizable of all book forms, and the casebound (hardcover book) structure is most commonly seen in the books that we encounter. We’ll learn to make a very simple one using what we learn from the pamphlet stitch.
