We will assume that C is indecomposable, or equivalently, its diagram Γ is connected. n L Consider the root lattice Z = 1≤i≤n Zei. The Tits form n n (−; −): Z × Z −! Z is a symmetric bilinear form given by (ei; ej) = aij. The radical of the Tits form is given by n rad(−; −) = fα 2 Z j (α; −) = 0g: Nonzero vectors in rad(−; −) are called radical vectors of the Cartan matrix C. Pn Lemma 1. Let α = aiei be a nonzero vector. Then α is radical if and only P i=1 if 2ai = j6=i jaijjaj for each 1 ≤ i ≤ n. P Proof. We just observe that (α; ei) = 2ai+ j6=i aijai and that aij ≤ 0 for i 6= j. Example 2. The following two diagrams correspond to two Cartan matrices. We Pn identify any vector i=1 aiei as a map, whose value on the i-th vertex is ai. We write the value ai on the i-th vertex. In contrast, the following fact is remarkable; see [1, Section 2]. Proposition 3. Let C be an indecomposable Cartan matrix with a radical vector P i aiei such that ai ≥ 0 for each i.
