Robert spoke about his experience and the importance of diplomatic service and that they may have life about Ireland’s place in the world, our role in the European Union and our membership of the United Nations. and have it to the full” (John 10:10), we aim to have a school community which is concerned with people as sons and daughters of God. - Terenure College Mission Statement. He also presented the Dublin D6W DK72 College with a UN flag and a copy of the preamble of the UN Charter, in recognition of Ireland’s contribution to addressing the biggest challenges facing our world today through peacekeeping, international development, human rights and disarmament. COLLEGE NEWS Team Maths Competition Our Sixth Years performed creditably on Friday the 24th of January in the annual Team Maths Competition. It is organised by the Irish Maths Teachers Association and the standard in extremely high. There were 54 teams of 4 from all the best schools in Leinster. All 216 students were accommodated in Rathdown School, Glenageary. Team B; James Keane, Andi Lupu, Steven King and Gavan Coyle managed 11th place. Team A; Dylan Curran, Thomas Lynch, Ben McCarthy and Killian Power managed 20th place. All of those competing got to see for themselves the actual standards they have to meet in this year's Leaving Cert. Well done lads. Applied Maths Competition Final On Thursday the 5th of March Terenure College, for the first time, fields a team of Senior Team Mathletes that are entering the IAMTA (Irish Applied Maths Teachers Association) Senior Applied Maths Regional Finals in the Institute of Education at 7.30pm. Captained by Dylan Curran, we wish them the very best of luck. Bt Young Scientist 2020 At the start of January in the RDS, our three young scientists Jack Mulvihill, Rory Maher and Matthew Heffernan presented their project “Preserving Conspicuous Road Markings”. After three grueling days of judging, unfortunately they didn’t receive an award in their category. However, they represented the school to the highest standard and are hoping to refine their project for further science competitions. BT received around 2000 applications to be in the competition this year, only 500 make it to the RDS. It is a big achievement to make it to the RDS in itself. Thanks in particular to anyone who supported the lads in undertaking their project, went into the RDS to support them or have asked them about their project. COLLEGE NEWS Computer Science Well done to our 5th Year Computer Science students who took part in the National Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. Rowan Barr, Frankie Walsh, Daniel O’Shea, Shane Power, Robert Somerville, Neil Broderick and Cesar Hannin all received Certificates. MUN Update Our Model United Nations students continue their run of success winning Outstanding Delegation (1st Place) at both Rathdown School MUN (RADMUN) in November and Blackrock College MUN (ROCKMUN) at the end of January. The Terenure College delegation representing the China withstood some rigorous policy criticism to eventually pass several resolutions at General Assembly at Rathdown, securing them the win. On that occasion Adam O’Connell, Leo McDonnell, Jack O’Connell, Matthew Bourke Doherty, Matthew Heffernan and Ion Stefu all were awarded individual Distinguished Delegate awards, in addition to the team prize. At ROCKMUN again a strong performance in committees and in General Assembly ensured the team representing USA came out on top. Adam O’Connell, Matthew Bourke- Doherty and Denis Ferry also won Distinguished Delegate at ROCKMUN. ROCKMUN RADMUN Debating News Congratulations to Jack Mulvihill and Matthew Bourke Doherty of TY who made it through to the Semi-finals of the Leinster Schools’ Senior Debating competition in Trinity College on the 25th of February 2020. Jack has since qualified for the Final of the Leinster Schools Senior Debating competition and we wish him the best of luck! Home Economics Well done to Luke Schmidt (4th Year) who got the highest mark in Ireland in ordinary level Junior Certificate Home Economics. This is a fantastic achievement, congratulations Luke! Luke and his Home Economics teacher, Ms. Jacob, received an award at the Association of Teachers of Home Economics Conference on the 9th of November in Athlone. COLLEGE NEWS AEC (Architect, Engineer & Construction) Pilot School Terenure are proud to be a pilot school for a new Transition Year Module in Architect, Engineer & Construction (AEC). The module involves students designing a building, around the needs of the College while learning about new careers, concepts, work practises and technologies within the Construction sector. Within this 11 week module students obtain a holistic knowledge of the industry, trends with in it while working as a team around the needs of a third party. The school is supported by industry professionals and third level lecturers, which work with the students at various stages of their projects. SPORTS NEWS Senior and Junior Cup Rugby After Christmas ‘Cup Fever’ slowly took over the College. From the great work done in organising Cup song practices to decorating the halls and First Year classrooms everyone was been looking forward to it all kicking off. On January 29th we decamped en masse to Donnybrook where our SCT took on Clongowes Wood College in the first round in what was a tricky tie for us. Despite a hard fought performance our Seniors unfortunately did not progress to the second round of the cup. Our Junior Cup team took on Kilkenny College in Naas RFC on Wednesday the 5th of February. In an incredible show of resilience, they battled back in the second half to go through to the Quarter Finals on a score of 17:13. We then travelled to Energia Park in Donnybrook on Monday the 24th of February to face Cistercian College Roscrea. In a nail biting match our Juniors put in a huge performance to over-turn an eight point deficit at half time. The effort and commitment by both teams showcased everything good about rugby at school boy level and we are very proud of them. The matched finished up 19:15 and our Junior Cup Team now face Newbridge College in the Semi-Final in Energia Park, Donnybrook on Tuesday the 10th of March at 3.00 p.m. Your support is greatly appreciated! SPORTS NEWS Athletics News Cross Country Success! We had a great day of cross country competition on the 23rd of January 2020 at the Phoenix Park. Luca Holmes (1.1) won the individual title and led the Terenure Team of; Adam Mooney(1.1), Troy Finnegan (1.3), Edwin Benny (1.4), Cillian Chambers (1.5), Jamie Dillon (1.1), Darragh Friel (1.5), Thomas Keating (1.3) and Josh Holloway (1.3) to the overall team title. In addition, Sean Quinn (3.5) was placed 6th and Ryan O'Neill (1st Year) was placed 7th in their respective Inter and Junior races. All 10 athletes (3 individual and 1 team) will go on to represent the school at the Leinster Championships in mid-February. Leinster Championships At the Leinster Championships Luca Holmes successfully qualified for the prestigious All-Ireland Schools finals by placing 13th in the minor boy's race. Ryan O'Neill and Sean Quin also put in some good performances but just missed out on qualification. Well done to all the students on a great cross country season and good luck to Luca at the Irish Schools Championships. Top Quality Performances by Byrne Robert Byrne (5th year) opened his 2020 track season by claiming Leinster bronze in the 60m in a new personal best time of 7.24s. This came after he also lowered his 200m personal best to 22.91s at the Dublin Championships before running a storming leg on his club team to win the 4x200m title. This was a great start to Robert's season as he targets the 400m, his main event in the outdoor season. Karate News Congratulations to Rían Fitzpatrick of 3rd Year who was selected to represent Ireland in the European Karate Championships in Budapest in early February.
