USS MINNEAPOLIS SAINT PAUL (LCS 21) Navy League of the United States – Minnesota Council The Minnesota Navy League is a registered 501c3. USS MINNEAPOLIS–SAINT PAUL (LCS 21) • The USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul (LCS 21) is built by Lockheed Martin Corp and is the fastest combat ship in the U.S. Navy. The ship is designed for shallow water missions and near-shore combat. It is designed to defeat asymmetric “anti-access” threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft. The ship will be homeported in Mayport, Florida. • USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul (LCS 21) will be commissioned in Duluth Minnesota in 2021. This will be the first time a US Navy ship has been commissioned in the state. • Be a part of the proud history of USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul by contributing/sponsoring the commissioning. HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF SHIPS NAMED FOR MINNESOTA AND ITS CITIES • Minnesota has a proud history of ships named for the State and its cities. LCS 21 will be the second ship named for the Twin Cities. The first vessel named Minneapolis-Saint Paul was a submarine that was decommissioned from Naval service in 2008. • Two other ships have been named for Minneapolis. The first Minneapolis (Cruiser No. 13) served from 1894–1921. The second, heavy cruiser Minneapolis (CA-36), served from 1934– 1947. In addition, two ships have been named for Saint Paul. The first Saint Paul, a steel passenger liner, retained her mercantile name in United States service, and served as an auxiliary cruiser in 1898 and from 1917–1919. The second, heavy cruiser St. Paul (CA-73), was ordered as Rochester but renamed St. Paul on 26 November 1942, and served from 1945–1971. WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE SHIP BE COMMISSIONED • USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul (LCS 21) will be commissioned in the Port of Duluth Minnesota in the spring of 2021. • The weeklong commissioning celebration will the first time a naval ship has been commissioned in the state of Minnesota. • You can be involved in the various events surrounding the commissioning, including a number of receptions, personal interactions with crewmembers, and opportunities to meet other dignitaries that will be present for the commissioning. Certain Individuals and businesses that participate in the commissioning week are designated as honorary plankowners and presented with various commemorative gifts representative of the ship and the commissioning Navy League of the United States – Minnesota Council The Minnesota Navy League is a registered 501c3. HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED Levels of sponsorship are based on Naval ranks, the highest being Admiral on down to Ensign. Our fundraising goal is $400,000. This covers the expenses that are incurred to commission future USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul (LCS 21) in the Port of Duluth. Additionally, this includes establishing a $70,000 college scholarship fund named on behalf of the ship. 100% of the your donated sponsorship funds goes to the project.
