Placements of broiler chicks for meat production totaled 9.68 billion during the 52 week period ending December 28, 2019, up 2 percent from the 52 week period ending December 29, 2018. Leading United States breeders had intended placements of 97.9 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2019, up 3 percent from 2018. Leading United States breeders had intended placements of 2.87 million egg-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2019, up 14 percent from 2018. Egg-type chicks hatched during 2019 totaled 631 million, down slightly from 2018. Turkey poults hatched during 2019 were down 1 percent from 2018, with 283 million hatched. Net poult placements totaled 261 million for 2019, down 2 percent from 2018. The capacity of chicken hatcheries on January 1, 2020, was 991 million eggs, up 2 percent from January 1, 2019.
