BRIGHTON PEOPLE’S THEATRE PROJECT BRIEF - BRAND IDENTITY, GRAPHIC DESIGN, WEBSITE DESIGN & BUILD Project leads: Naomi Alexander, Artistic Director Sarah Wickens, General Manager Project timescale: December 2018 - January 2019 Project Launch: Thursday 31 January 2019 Fee: £6,000 inc. VAT Formed in 2015, Brighton People’s Theatre is a theatre company which makes work by, for and with people in the city of Brighton & Hove. In January 2019, Brighton People’s Theatre (BPT) will launch a year-long programme of work in Brighton & Hove that aims to demonstrate an appetite for a permanent people’s theatre in the city. We aim to actively engage with a minimum of 100 local residents from communities least likely to engage in or have access to current arts provision in the city. We are looking for a talented individual, team or agency to create an exciting new visual identity, website and print marketing collateral to promote our 2019 programme. ABOUT BRIGHTON PEOPLE’S THEATRE BPT wants to create the best quality theatre possible. We enable professional theatre makers to collaborate with non-professionals, to push boundaries of what theatre can be, and to entertain and inspire audiences. Our first production Tighten Our Belts (2016) was a powerful show co-created with participants recruited through the Brighton Unemployed Centre Families Project. Addressing the effects of austerity, Tighten Our Belts attracted sell-out audiences at Brighton Dome with no marketing spend. Its pay-what-you-decide pricing model raised more than £2000 over the two performances. Feature: Tighten Our Belts, interview with Artistic Director, Naomi Alexander > Review: Tighten Our Belts, The Argus > In 2017 and 2018, we co-created and delivered the neighbourhood arts festival Your Place in Hangleton and East Brighton in collaboration with local steering groups and Brighton Festival. These free-to-attend weekends brought top artists to community venues in Hangleton and East Brighton attracting hundreds of local people: Video: Brighton People’s Theatre & Brighton Festival: Your Place 2018 > Video: Brighton People’s Theatre & Brighton Festival: Designing Your Place > For 2019, we have raised funding to deliver a programme of creative workshops, theatre clubs, play-reading groups and public meetings across Brighton and Hove. Activities will run termly. Over the course of the year and we want to recruit at least 100 new members, primarily but not exclusively, from the neighbourhoods of Hangleton & Knoll, Moulsecoomb & Bevendean, and East Brighton (Whitehawk, Manor Hill and the Bristol Estate). 1 DELIVERABLES Brand Identity ● New logo, typography and application guidelines Website Design & Build ● Website design and build (home, about, join, events, news, contact) ● Liaison with Cloud Perfect to ensure integration with our new web based Zoho CRM system ● Support with domain name management and identifying web hosting solution Digital Design ● Digital invite (web-res poster) for launch ● Social media graphics (Facebook cover, Instagram squares, Twitter handle etc.) ● E-newsletter wrapper (to be set up on Mailchimp/Zoho Campaigns or similar for integration with our new web based Zoho CRM system) Print Design ● A3 poster + A6 flyer brand-awareness campaign for neighbourhood distribution ● Pull up banner, vinyl banner, bunting and beermats for use at recruitment / community events ● A4 termly listings publication (simple one or two colour format that can be updated in-house) TIMESCALES The 2019 programme and new brand / website will be launched to the public and media at an event in central Brighton on Thursday 31 January 2019. All print also needs to be ready by this date so it can be immediately rolled out to our target neighbourhoods of Hangleton, Moulsecoomb, Bevendean and East Brighton. We envisage the following deadlines during the project timescale. The launch date is fixed but all other dates are open to negotiation. Contractor/s appointed Friday 7 December 2018 Project start date Monday 10 December 2018 Brand identity sign off Monday 21 December 2018 Digital design sign off Friday 11 January 2019 Print sign off Friday 18 January 2019 Website ready for testing Friday 18 January 2019 Launch event Thursday 31 January 2019 EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST Expressions of interest outlining why you would like to work on this project, how you would approach the brief and examples of previous work should be emailed to [email protected] by 6pm on Monday 3 December 2018. We will invite potential contractors to meet us during w/c Monday 3 December in central Brighton. We aim to engage the successful contractor that same week to start immediately. We appreciate the short lead time on this project, and we ask you to consider your ability to fulfill this brief in the required timescale. 2 BRAND IDENTITY & GRAPHIC DESIGN The new brand identity and graphic design for Brighton People’s Theatre will: ● Be relevant. The look and feel will be relatable and enticing for people who might usually see the arts as a turn off. Language to be friendly and direct, avoiding arts speak. ● Be local. Celebrate the experiences, stories and creativity of residents in outer lying, less-served neighbourhoods of Brighton & Hove: Hangleton & Knoll; Moulsecoomb & Bevendean; and East Brighton. ● Be adaptable. Future projects may widely vary in style or content e.g. fun family-friendly musical, political statement, children or older people focus. ● Be high-quality. Reflect the professionalism and high-production values of BPT and the artists it collaborates with, without being too clever or ‘arty’. ● Be accessible. We collaborate with local community organisations to involve people who might not think theatre is for them and we programme shows/workshops in community venues. EXISTING COLLATERAL We have a very limited number of photos from Tighten Our Belts, and a selection of photos from Your Place in 2017 and 2018. Previous publicity for BPT has used an illustrative approach as seen here. We have a significant amount of video footage from previous events which could potentially be edited and used on the website and social media. BPT will provide all required copy. WEBSITE DESIGN & BUILD As well as making a splash in general, the website will need to incorporate the following: Accessibility This includes clarity of design, typography and language, and meeting current website accessibility standards. It also means being relevant to the diverse audiences in look-and-feel and content. Content Management System We envisage WordPress or similar content management system which allows easy and intuitive updating by BPT small core team. The chosen content management system will need to fully support and integrate with our new web based Zoho CRM system. Data capture We would like new members to be able to join online via a simple form. We are currently working with Cloud Perfect to set up a new web based CRM system via Zoho One. We would like our web developer to liaise with the Cloud Perfect technical team to ensure all website forms and payment methods are linked to this new system. BPT will develop its own Privacy Policy in line with GDPR regulations which needs to feature prominently. We would also like some support in implementing a system to track website usage (and develop any associated policies) so we can monitor the effectiveness of the site on a regular basis. Donate & Pay what you decide The pricing model for all of BPT’s events is free or pay-what-you-decide (PWYD). PWYD allows members to make a payment for an activity or event on the basis of what is affordable for them. Consequently, a payment function 3 (through PayPal or similar) needs to be prominent across the site. We would also like to have a donate button/link for BPT friends and supporters. Mailing List We want to offer the chance to sign up for updates prominently and early on in their user journey on the site. Again, this will involve capturing a certain amount of data: name, email, postcode, level of current / previous arts engagement. The sign-up form will need to be fully integrated with our new Zoho One CRM system and associated email marketing. Cloud Perfect will be available to support and advise. Mobile Friendly / Responsive Web Design We anticipate that most potential and new members will be accessing our website via mobile phones with slow download speeds so the website will need to work well with a range of different screen sizes and load times. Search Engine Optimisation We would like the developer to advise on and incorporate SEO where possible. Site Navigation & Layout We are envisaging the website will consist of six sections at the time of launch. • Home • About A section for information about BPT. This could include company information; team (staff, artists, board); projects; partners/funders; and policies/procedures. • Join Membership sign up form (linked to our new web based Zoho CRM system) • Events (feed) A section for events displayed by event start date / time and which move to an archive upon expiry. Events may be bookable in different ways e.g. registration via a form or third-party ticketing. All booking mechanisms must be compatible with and linked to our new web based Zoho CRM system. • News (feed) A section for blog posts and news items; text, photo and video content; artist call outs; job opportunities; and other time-sensitive content. • Contact Contact details, mailing list sign up form (linked to our new web based Zoho CRM system) and enquiry form We are envisaging the website header/footer will be used to reinforce prominent content requirements but are open to proposals as to how this might best work. For example – contact details, mailing list sign up, donate button/link, PWYD button/link, funder logos, links to social media channels, privacy policy, terms & conditions etc. Web Hosting & Domain Name We will require support in identifying a suitable hosting service for the new website and assistance with management of our chosen domain name (www.brightonpeoplestheatre.org).
