Deepen Embed Access, Develop and Building the Age- Capacity- Equity and Promote a Policy Friendly Building at Inclusion within and Advocacy Movement Community the Age-Friendly Platform for Level Movement Healthy Aging Aging Population in MA (60+) 2015 20-year projection Age- and Dementia Friendly Best Practices Data: Start the Conversation Data: Start the Conversation Collaborative, Open-Door Approach It all starts with CONVENING: Active Age- and Dementia Friendly models in Massachusetts • Age- and Dementia Friendly Cape Ann (emerging): • ASAP-led model with support from Tufts Health Plan Foundation to work with UMass- Boston for four communities (Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, Manchester) • Age-Friendly Berkshires (AARP – Municipal Resolution): • Countywide effort began with regional planning agency and private-pay home care company that lead “planning” and “people” sides of the work, respectively. • Age-Friendly Boston (AARP): • City’s Elderly Commission have dedicated staff to convene groups, liaise between city departments and carry out action plan. • Support from THPF and UMass Boston • Age-Friendly Framingham (Emerging): • City’s Public Health Department co-leads with Latino Health Insurance Program • Salem for All Ages (AARP): • Volunteer, retired professor leads “people” side of the work with support from Mayor’s office and local volunteers/volunteer orgs Age-Friendly for All Ages Rates of Alzheimer’s/Dementia 2016: 120,000 2025: 150,000 Dementia Friendly: Cross-Sector Approach Alignment with Dementia Friendly Mass. Councils on Aging are the backbone organization for Dementia Friendly Massachusetts Age-Friendly Community efforts… • Include people living with Dementia, caregivers, and service/support providers on task force • A Dementia Friendly advisory group that Age + can focus on raising awareness and Dementia working through sectors in coordination with Age-Friendly https://mcoaonline.com/programs/dementia-friendly/ Age-Friendly Lens Focus on linking Social Determinants of Health Focus on Access, Equity, Inclusion What Determines Population Health? Source: Countyhealthrankings.org Age-Friendly Communities in MA Age-Friendly Communities in MA • Active: 43 Communities • 35 AARP-designated Age-Friendly Communities • 2 WHO-designated • 7 Municipal Resolutions Signed (all in Berkshires). • 5 Martha’s Vineyard towns (Island is designated as a Active, 43 Active region and all five towns approved funding at town (resolution), 7 meeting to hire an island-wide Age-Friendly Informed, 65 Coordinator w/ island planning commission) • Emerging: 72 Communities • Cities and towns with at least two entities/orgs Emerging, 72 working on becoming AF • Informed: 65 Communities • Cities and towns with an official that has been made Opportunity, aware of AF/DF movement and concepts, but is not 164 currently taking action. • Opportunity: 164 Communities • Communities where awareness of AF/DF is undocumented, incomplete, or nonexistent Age-Friendly State • Governor announced that Massachusetts has been designated by the AARP as only the second state in the country to join that organization’s Age-Friendly Network. • Landmark Alzheimer’s/Dementia training and awareness law.
