Cyclone Gati • The Cyclone Gati that was reported in the coastal areas of Puntland and Somaliland on 22nd November • Affected 180,000 people, of which 42,000 have been displaced • Affected include farmers, fishermen, traders, and other rural inhabitants • Most affected districts include: Bosaso, Allula, Banndarbayla, Qandala and Iskushuban, Erigabo and Lasqoray districts • In Bossaso over 38,000 people are affected; heavy rains that lasted more than 24 hours in the town • More assessments of outside villages are being conducted by partners Cyclone Gati • Health Cluster data collection tool for ‘Sudden Onset Emergencies”: 6 partners reported so far: ✔ 9 affected districts across 3 Regions: Bossaso, Qardho, Caluula, Iskushuban (Bari), Laasqoray, Ceerigaabo (Sanaag), Taleex, Xudun, Laas Caanood, (Sool) ✔ Individual(#) Affected = 139,318 ✔ Individuals(#) Displaced = 44,988 ✔ People (#) in need of health services due to flooding, displacement or loss of health care services = 71,068 ✔ People (#) needed to reach through temporary and mobile services = 41,988 ✔ 17 HCFs are affected: 8 partly functional, 9 remain fully functional ...catchment population for these health facilities is 221,896 ✔ EWAR is disrupted due to communications services down; may cause delays in picking-up outbreak Public Health Risks • Significant water-borne disease (Cholera) outbreak risk • Probable increase in malaria • Measles risk due to HCFs damaged, difficulty in movement causing interruptions to vaccination • Displacement will increase COVID-19 risk, due to interruptions in RCCE; and crowding / movement of people • Dengue fever likely; six months out after water recedes as standing water provides breading grounds Partner response ∙ CARE: set-up and prepositioned 2 mobile teams and medical supplies in Ceerigabo and Lasqorey of Sanaag ∙ WHO planning supplies distribution ∙ MSF planning to send an assessment team to Bosaso this Thursday, December 3, and will most likely respond in WASH and emergency Health ∙ SCI is supporting health services in Hafun district: ∙ The structures at Hafun referral health center, Dardare PHU and Gardush PHU are significantly damaged where the wind took off the top roof ∙ Resources are needed in order to repair the referral health center as soon as possible to restore services.
