On May Day, 1918, Petrograd (formerly St. Petersburg, having been renamed after the fall of the Tsar, and soon to be renamed yet again, to Leningrad) was festooned in red. A decorated Roman chariot symbolizing Freedom led an organized procession of massed workers. The central figure of the festival was the personified hero of the revolution – a worker standing against the background of the rising sun. On that same May Day, in Moscow, a new symbol of the soviet state appeared among the May Day decorations – the crossed Hammer and Sickle, which in the summer of 1918 became its official emblem. The flag of the Soviet Union would be plain bright red, standing for revolution, with the crossed Hammer and Sickle in the upper inside corner. A small star, a symbol of the Communist Party, is above the Hammer and Sickle. The Hammer and Sickle, representing united workers and peasants, were ultimately meant to represent the hoped-for spread of Communism. In the hearts and minds of deceived liberty-seeking men, however, the USSR would be representing the prophesied dominant powerful Hammer of the Whole Earth, proven through its Hammer and Sickle symbol.
