Fulgencio Batista • Fulgencio Basta, was the elected President of Cuba from 1940 to 1944, and dictator from 1952 to 1959. Basta's acts started the need for a revoluEon. Fidel Castro led an uprising against him by aacking the military barracks at SanEago de Cuba also known as the Moncada barraks. Moncada Barracks ⦿ As a start to the revoluEon Castro and his men acEvely plo4ed to overthrow Basta. They collected guns and ammuniEon and finalized their plans for an armed aack on Moncada Barracks, Basta's largest military base outside SanEago de Cuba. On the 26th of July, 1953, they aacked Moncada Barracks. ⦿ The Céspedes garrison in Bayamo was also aacked as a diversion. ⦿ The aack proved disastrous and more than sixty of the 135 revoluEonaries involved were killed. “History will Absolve me” ⦿ Soon aer Fidel Castro's aack 1953 in October 16 Fidel Castro makes "History Will Absolve Me" speech in his own defense against the charges brought on him aer the aack on the Moncada Barracks. Meeting Che Guevara ⦿ In june 1955 the Castro brothers met with Che Guevara in Mexico, in hope that he would help them conEnue with their cause of rebellion. ⦿ A`er the meeEng the Castro brothers took Che Guevara and 80 others on a boat and returned to cuba. Sail from Mexico to Cuba The Castro brothers sailed to Mexico for meeEng with Che Guevara and returned back to Cuba with Che Guevara and 80 others. First Victory ⦿ January 1957- As the revoluEonaries arrived in Cuba aer meeEng in Mexico they quickly took over an army outpost on the coast. ⦿ Their small victory encouraged others in the country to take their side in the revoluEon. The Catch of the movement ⦿ As the movement caught on more people joined Fidel Castro's side. ⦿ As a part in the movement college students stormed the presidenEal palace and protesters were killed in the streets. Fulgencio Batista launches Operation Verano ⦿ May 1958- Basta launches Operaon Verano aiming to crush Castro and his revoluEonaries. ⦿ Although heavily outnumbered, Castro's forces scored many victories, largely aided by the running away of Basta's army and poorly trained uncommi4ed young enlists. The Cuban Boycott ⦿ In 1958, nearing the end of the Cuban RevoluEon, the United States begins to boyco4 the aiding of Cuba and stops sending supplies into the area. ⦿ This is one of many conflicts between the United States and Cuba, another example is the trade embargo bestowed in 1960. Castro's forces advance ⦿ Fidel Castro’s troops take the capital city of Havana. ⦿ President Basta flees the city. A new government ⦿ A`er demolishing Basta's dictatorship Castro put Cuba under communist rule. Although many Americans viewed this communist state as a bad thing, Castro was able to reduce illiteracy, put a damper on racism, and provide public health care. However there was a large amount of criEcism for his economic and poliEcal restricEons. The End of the revolution ⦿ In late December 1958 Castro’s forces gather for an aack on the city of Santa Clara. ⦿ This would be the last bale of the revoluEon. Che Guevara after the battle.
