Accession Number: LR002013 Creator: American Federation of Teachers Acquisition: Publications from the AFT and AFT affiliates have been coming to the Reuther Library since the 1960s and placed in the library division of the Reuther Library. This is an artificial collection made up of these publications from AFT headquarters, AFT affiliates and individuals associated with the AFT drawn from the pre-existing library collection and from various other shipments. Abstract The American Federation of Teachers was founded in 1916 and immediately made the American Teacher, published by the New York City Teachers Union, as its’ official organ. Since then the AFT has published numerous publications that range from organizing tools to professional development materials for its members. They also have published materials that deal with specific issue dealing with the labor movement, tenure, civil and human rights as well as teaching tools. Official publications of the AFT also spoke directly to the AFT’s diverse membership, which includes higher education higher education faculty and staff, paraprofessionals, public employees and healthcare workers. Scope and Content: This collection of materials range from the serials created by the AFT, convention and executive council abridged transcripts and reports, brochures/pamphlets and booklets talking about numerous issues that affect the AFT’s members, the union movement and other social issues. The other half of this collection consists of publications created by AFT locals and state federations which allows the researcher to see what issues were facing rank and file members of the AFT from across the United States. Affiliate publications are mostly newspapers and magazines. There are very few notes and correspondence within the series. Of note is a section in the series of official publications from affiliates about their own history. Series 2: AFT Official Organs, 1912-2013 Newspapers and bulletins that are official publications from the AFT. The bulk being the American Teacher newspaper and magazine. Bound volumes 39-49 consists of the American Teacher Magazine. Other official publications represent divisions of the AFT: higher education, healthcare, public employees, PSRPs and AFT retirees. The formats are bound, unbound and microfilm. Series 3: Convention, Executive Council, and Constitutions 1918-1996 Series 3 is comprised of abridged transcripts of some AFT conventions and executive council meetings. There are presidents’ and officers’ reports and constitutions of the AFT. The constitutions are not a full run. There is a short run of convention materials from 1972-1974 and 1980 with the majority of the materials on the 1974 convention in which Shanker was elected. Various convention calls and programs are also included in this series. Series 4: Affiliate Publications Newspapers and constitutions published by AFT affiliates. These are not complete runs.
