The company's roots can be traced back to 1969 when Kirk Kerkorian, owner of Tracinda Corporation, a private investment firm, built the Martin Stern Jr. designed International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. At that time, the International Hotel was the world's largest hotel. That same year, Kerkorian purchased the movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and in 1973 built the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip with Martin Stern Jr. as designer. The MGM Grand would take the title as the world's largest hotel at that time. In 1986, Grand Name Co. was formed and renamed MGM Grand Inc. a year later. The MGM Grand Hotel and - Page 3- Guide to the MGM Mirage Corporation Records Casino was sold to Bally Manufacturing in 1986, who renamed the hotel Bally's. In 1993, Kerkorian built a new MGM Grand in Las Vegas that again would be the world's largest hotel complex at that time. In 1999, MGM Grand Inc. acquired Primadonna Resorts from Gary Primm. This added Whiskey Pete's, Buffalo Bill's and the Primm Valley Resort, all in Primm, Nevada to MGM's portfolio. In 2000, Kirk Kerkorian approached Steve Wynn, owner of Mirage Resorts Inc., with an offer to purchase his company at $17 a share. The offer was rejected but later a deal was reached at $21 a share. With this deal, MGM Grand Inc. now known as MGM Mirage, acquired fully or shares of: Mirage Hotel and Casino, Bellagio, Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, Boardwalk, Golden Nugget Las Vegas, Golden Nugget Laughlin, and Beau Rivage in Mississippi. In 2005, MGM Mirage acquired Mandalay Resort Group adding to it's portfolio: Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, Circus Circus, and THEhotel. In 2010, the company was renamed MGM Resorts International to reflect the brand as a global entertainment company.
