Selim Yavuz is a first-year PhD student at Leeds Beckett University, UK. With a background in musicology, his doctoral research focuses upon three sub-genres of doom metal – death doom, funeral doom, and gothic doom- through an exploration of genealogy, identity, and Northernness. His previous research includes death and suicide in depressive suicidal black metal, and John Dowland’s rhetorical techniques and Elizabethan culture. He is an editorial assistant for Metal Music Studies journal. Via Adobe Connect. Abstract: Death doom metal or death/doom emerges as a distinct style in the early 1990s mostly focused in northern England. It may be argued that this style or, tentatively, sub-genre of doom is a leisure space for participants in this culture. Dark leisure theory attempts to describe non-mainstream leisure activity. This theory has its origins in criminological and psychological approaches that subscribed to a moral absolutism relying heavily on deviancy and social control. With the work of recent scholars such as Karl Spracklen, DJ Williams and Philip Stone however, the theory is on its way to becoming a tool for providing fruitful perspectives, especially in relation to extreme music subcultures. The presentation will introduce the music and culture of death doom metal style in light of dark leisure theory.
