OK % T ESA CASTLE (as it is commonly , though S erroneously cal led) is one of the most perfect and interesting specimens of an early fortified mansion in England ; and from the beauty of o its situation , in a valley b unded by steep and richly O % wooded hills , at whose base the river ney ows through int e re t sin luxuriant meadows , it forms an object as g to * the artist as to the antiquarian . At the time of the Norman conquest the manor o f fEldre d Stoke was held by , a freeman , under Edric S ylvaticus , a powerful Saxon thane ; but on the wild Edric joining in a revolt of the Welsh , his estates were 1 0 0 seized by the king , and in 7 the earldom of Shrews fi bury , with three hundred and fty seven manors in n Shropshire , were conferred by the Co queror on his kinsman Roger de Montgomery . D omesday Bo o k speaks thus of Stokesay The same Roger holdeth Stokes . Here are seven hides arable ffi geldable . The land is su cient for fourteen ox . teams . In demesne are five teams , and sixteen among the male an d female serfs and there are twenty V illeins n with eight teams , and ine female cottars . Here is a m ill yielding nine quarters of wheat yearly , and here is a miller and a keeper of bees . After the death of Roger de Montgomery and of so n his eldest , his estates were forfeited and Stoke again Bele sm e fell to the crown , in consequence of Roger de so n the younger , having espoused the cause of Robert , N n Duke of ormandy , in his attempt to obtain the E glish r t hrone . This John de Verdun had considerable estates in in - n Leicestershire but the forty sixth of He ry I I I , being B and one of the arons marchers , he several others were o t he ir ordered to reside n border properties , to check the n i n cursions of the Welsh .
