2019 Annual Report A Journey To Excellence Gold Council* *"“Scouting's Journey to Excellence" is the BSA's performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of our units, districts, and councils. It is meant to encourage excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA. Points are awarded using predefined criteria and measures in the categories of finance, membership, program, unit service, leadership and governance. You are building leaders, serving families, and helping our communities. Scouting in the Great Southwest Council cannot succeed without your dedication. In 2019, the GSWC hit a milestone. Thanks to your embrace of the Partnership for Scouting, the Council eliminated 99% of our long-term debt and decreased our negative assets from -$410,218 to -$29,080. In addition to improving our financial position, we increased our community membership by 5.1% and started 32 new Packs and Troops. We thank you for helping the Great Southwest Council become one of the West’s finest organizations for serving youth. We cannot wait to see what is in store for the future of Scouting in New Mexico and portions of Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. Because of you, 2019 was a historic success. How We Invested Financial Facts How We Are Funded • 2019 Income: $1,418,326 • 2019 Expenses: $1,415,216* *12/31/19 unaudited financials Membership Notables • 5.2% increase in community membership • 2,216 registered adult volunteers • 151 packs, 155 troops, 15 crews, and 3 posts • 6,548 registered youth • 3% increase in number of Cub Scouts recruited Thank you to The Scouts in Action Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their partnership, Great Southwest Council Highlights support, and friendship over the past 95 years. • 49 youth attended National Youth Leader Training • 74 Scouts attended Brownsea Steve Christiansen, Dale Balmer, • 3,371 total rank advancements Christopher Shelby and Chad Hjorth • 2,076 in Cub Scouts (8% increase over 2018) • 1,295 in Boy Scouts (2% increase over 2018) Camping News • 5,036 Merit Badges earned (17% increase over 2018) • 6 Cub Scout day camps held for 643 youth • Over 30,000 pounds of food collected during the • 678 youth attended summer programs at Gorham Scouting for Food service project, benefitting the Scout Ranch Roadrunner Food Bank and local pantries in Los • $8,800 awarded in camp scholarships to 48 youth Alamos, Farmington, and Durango. • 81% of our Scouts BSA members attended • Over 60,000 hours of Service, summer camp valued in excess of $1.2 million • Webelos Week in the Woods at Gorham Scout • Online auction raised $7,800 Ranch had 88 participants • Sporting Clays event hosted 17 Teams-of-Five and Cowboy Action Shooting. New to Gorham Scout raised over $26,300 Ranch in 2019. This new program provides the • 175 young men achieved the excitement of action shooting in a safe environment. Recognition Center Silver Beaver Class of 2019 The Silver Beaver Award Girls in Scouting recognizes registered Scouters of exceptional character who Scouts BSA. The Great Southwest Council welcomed have provided distinguished service within a Council. their first girl Troops in 2019. We had 120 girls in 16 Congratulations to: troops, earning 436 merit badges and 58 rank Skip Brown advancements. The Great Southwest Council The Council is governed by an Executive Board of Directors that consists of volunteers elected by each unit’s chartered organization representative, Council members-at-large and the current Executive Board. The Executive Board is headed by two volunteers: the Council President and the Council Commissioner. The Council President, Council Commissioner and other Board officers are also members of the Council’s Executive Committee.
