Hazard Incidences in Bangladesh, June 2021 Overview of Hazard Incidences in June 2021 In June 2021, 15 hazards took place across Bangladesh i.e. Covid-19 pandemic, Boat capsizes, Earthquake, Fire, Lightning, Storm, Wall collapse, Bridge collapse, Embankment collapse, Tornado, Riverbank Erosion, Landslide, Waterlogging, Heavy rainfall, and Explosion. The most devastating Covid-19 affected a total of 112,818 persons across the country among which 1,884 persons died and 75,819 persons recovered in June 2021. Lightning was another severe hazard in terms of the death of 103 people and injury of 26 occurring in 36 districts. NDRCC reported total of 347 Fire incidents throughout the country. However, from NDRCC Daily Disaster Reports and different dailies, detailed information of 28 fire incidents were found in which 5 people died and 14 people were injured. A devastating Explosion took place at Mogbazar in Dhaka district. 11 people died and 200 were injured in this incidence. In 7 districts, building collapse caused the death of 5 people with injuries of 3. In 5 districts 2 people died and 6 people went missing due to Boat Capsize. Bridges collapse incidences in 4 districts killed 1 person and injured 5. Besides, 4 persons died by landslide in Cox’sBazar. Riverbank erosion occurred in 5 districts with huge loss of lives, properties, and croplands. Moreover, Heavy rainfall caused losses of crops, livestock, and fish in 6 districts. Embankment collapsed in 3 districts which resulted in waterlogging. Storm blew over Patuakhali and Kurigram districts with damage to infrastructure. Barguna witnessed Tornado, with damage to 5 houses. In addition, one incident of Earthquake was felt in the Sylhet region. Description of Hazard Incidents in June 2021 Covid-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh The increasing number of infections from the Delta variant of COVID-19 has exacerbated the current situation of Bangladesh. Throughout this month, Bangladesh experienced high impacts of COVID-19 across the country, especially a rapid surge in border areas. The number of identified patients with Covid-19 was 112,818 among which 75,819 persons recovered and 1,884 persons died. From the very first case identified on March 8, 2020, the total number of Covid-19 patients is 913,258 among which 14,503 persons died and 816,250 persons recovered up to June 30, 2021. The affected districts are namely Dhaka, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Narsingdi, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Tangail, Kishoreganj, Gazipur, Rajshahi, Sirajganj, Joypurhat, Pabna, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj, Lakshmipur, Feni, Noakhali, Chattogram, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Habiganj, Bhola, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Jamalpur, Netrokona, Mymensingh, Satkhira, Magura, Khulna, Meherpur and Chuadanga. Fire From NDRCC Daily Disaster Reports and different dailies, detailed information of 347 fire incidents were found in which 5 people died, 14 people injured and 82 shops, 522 houses, 27 storehouses, 2 factories burnt as well as 5 cows killed due to fire throughout this month. (See Annex-3 for Upazila wise details). Among which 5 wall collapses resulted in 5 deaths and 3 injuries. The other 3 incidences caused a roof collapse of cold storage and damaged an under-construction 4 storied building. Losses of 4 lacks tk. Landslide 3 incidents of landslide took place in Cox’s Bazar. 2 Rohingya people died in Teknaf (Source: prothomalo June 5, 2021). Moreover, 2 children died in Maheshkhali upazila in two separate landslides (Source: link 1, link 2 June 2021). Riverbank erosion Riverbank erosion affected with huge loss of lives, properties, and croplands in 5 districts i.e. Sirajganj, Jhalokathi, Kurigram, Gopalganj, and Patuakhali. 315 houses, 2 schools melted away in the river and 13 villages affected in Sirajganj district. Communication was disrupted among 8 villages in Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali district due to damage of 1.5 km pucca road. In Jhalokathi, 8 shops washed away in the river which amounted to a loss of 50 lakh taka. 50 houses fully damaged at Ulipur upazila in Kurigram. In addition, Croplands, houses & trees washed away into the Madhumati River in Gopalganj Sadar. (See Annex-4 for more details). Heavy rainfall: Heavy rainfall occurred in 6 districts i.e. Maulavibazar, Kushtia, Kurigram, Sunamganj, Mymensingh, and Sherpur which resulted in a severe communication disruption, huge loss of croplands & fish, making people waterlogged, etc. In Mymensingh district, 37 villages became waterlogged. 25-hectare seedbed and 15 villages inundated in Sherpur. In addition, 300 bighas croplands were damaged in waterlogging in Kushtia. (See Annex-5 for more details). Storm Storm blew over 2 districts i.e. Patuakhali & Kurigram. Electricity was disrupted for breaking electric poles in Patuakhali Sadar upazila. (Source: samakal June 9, 2021) Moreover, 3 people were injured and 1 house damaged due to a storm at Fulbari Upazila in Kurigram. (Source: jagonews24 June 29, 2021) Embankment collapse Embankment collapsed in 3 districts i.e. Sirajganj, Nilphamari & Satkhira. 10 thousand people became victims of waterlogging because of embankment collapse at Assasuni upazila in Satkhira (Source: prothomalo June 5, 2021). 0.7 Km embankment damaged in Dimla, Nilphamari and 100 meters of town protection embankment damaged fully in Sirajganj Sadar upazila. (Source: bangla.bdnews24 , prothomalo June, 2021) Earthquake An earthquake was felt in the Sylhet region on June 7, 2021. A school building had been observed to be cracked. (Source: bangla.bdnews24 June 8, 2021) Tornado Finally, an incidence of a tornado was reported at Amtoli upazila in Barguna District which uprooted 200 trees and damaged 5 houses. (Source: samakal June 8, 2021) Waterlogging 3 incidents of waterlogging occurred in 3 districts i.e. Barishal, Sirajganj, and Rangpur. 200 bigha almonds land inundated at Chouhali upazila in Sirajganj (Source: prothomalo June 16, 2021). In Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur, 15 villages were inundated (Source: bangla.dhakatribune June 21, 2021). Moreover, an incident took place in Barishal Sadar upazila, of which no impact was reported (Source: samakal June 9, 2021). Bridge collapse 4 incidences of bridge collapse occurred in Gaibandha, Chattogram, Noakhali, and Patuakhali districts. In Gaibandha, communication was disrupted between Sadullapur and Palashbari upazila for collapsing a bridge in Sadullapur.
