NMHS Progress Report (Reporting Period - April 2019 to March 2020) 1. Project Information Project ID: NMHS/2017-18/MG42/26 Sanction 26/Feb/2018 Date: Project Title: Assessment and Conservation Practices of Pollinators through Community Participation in the Indian Trans Himalayan Region: Climate Change Perspective BTG: PI and Dr. V.P. Uniyal Affiliation Scientist-G (Institution): Wildlife Institute of India Chandrabani, Dehradun - 248 001, Uttarakhand Name & NA Address of the Co-PI, if any: Structured The present study was conducted to assess the insect Pollinators diversity Abstract and distribution in the Jammu & Kashmir (Ladakh), Dehradun, Mandkani watershed, around Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand). Sampling was done by direct method i.e. sweep netting in case of pollinating insects. Hand picking method, visual search, vegetation beating and litter extraction methods were used, opportunistic sampling and aerial sampling of pollinators was also done. Random Sampling for pollinators has been done which majorly includes Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Diptera. In addition to sampling, basic agricultural techniques and farming systems, time of seed sowing-flowering-harvesting have also been discussed with the local community farmers through questionnaire sessions. A Questionnaire survey on organic and inorganic farming is also carried out to know the type of farming and use of harmful pesticides for conservation prospects of pollinators. Total 128 morphospecies of insect pollinators have been identified from agro- Page | 1 ecosystem and natural forest consisting of Diptera (17), Hymenoptera (51) and Lepidoptera (60) from study area. Inappropriate use of pesticide and insecticides was identidied as a major thereat to insect diversity in the study area. However we have indentified a good number of hymnopteran species from the study area, which are important contributors in the wild and managed ecosystems. Total 10 capacity building programmes have been organized for the sensitication of the insect pollinators.
