Shawnigan Lake School Hockey Program Canada’s Boarding School. Canada’s Game. Shawnigan Lake School is a co-educational, university-preparatory boarding school for boys and girls in grades 8-12. Located beside the shore of the lake that shares our name, Shawnigan has a nearly century-long tradition of excellence in offering a complete education to our students. A rigorous academic curriculum, combined with exposure to athletic, artistic and leadership opportunities, creates graduates armed with the skills necessary to succeed in university and beyond. More than 90% of Shawnigan’s students live full-time on campus in one of nine modern, comfortable boarding houses. We are proud to be a 24/7 boarding school and not merely a “school with boarding.” This distinction allows us to take advantage of educational opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. Students learn to be independent, but know that a caring, committed group of adults is never more than an arm’s reach away. A thrilling combination of speed and skill, gracefulness and grittiness, the sport gives athletes of all ages a perfect venue to learn lessons about teamwork, dedication and commitment. Historically, Shawnigan has competed in a local league, practicing and playing games at Kerry Park Arena against other teams from the area and traditional independent school rivals including Brentwood College School and St. George’s School. Though the School does everything possible to maximize the amount of ice time available to its teams and players, scheduling conflicts have forced Shawnigan teams to look beyond their local community for time to hone their skills. Beginning in the 2015-16 season, Shawnigan’s hockey program will compete in an on-campus facility. The result of the leadership and intiative of a group of parents and donors, this facility will allow the program to maximize ice time, and offer students a truly unique combination of academics and sport development. The long-term vision for the hockey program includes as many as three boys teams and a girls program. Although technical and tactical aspects of the game are important, we believe the true development of an athlete includes a focus on character. Shawnigan develops athletes with skill, knowledge and, most importantly, a passion for competition. Our coaching staff includes former professional players and coaches who are committed to maximizing the ability and enjoyment of every player in the program. Shawnigan Hockey Hockey Program’s vision is to combine a much-valued Shawnigan education with a high quality hockey experience. All the strands of a truly “complete education” are pursued, with academic excellence at the heart of everything we do. For 2014-15, Shawnigan’s ice hockey program includes two teams, one each at the Bantam and Midget levels. Each team’s season of play begins in September and runs until Spring Break in mid-March. When not on the ice, athletes take part in SAT Prep programs beginning in grade 10. Teams also “tour” each year to Eastern Canada and the United States, where they compete in tournaments before top tier coaches. In 2015 they will also compete in the National Independent School Invitational Championships (NISIC), co-hosted by Upper Canada College and St. Andrews College in Ontario. The Varsity team, made up of students in grades 10-12, competes in the prestigious Canadian Sport Schools Hockey League (CSSHL). The CSSHL was created in 2009 and includes teams from British Columbia, Alberta and Idaho. It has grown from five sport schools to 11 across five divisions (U18 Prep, U18 Varsity, Elite 15s, Bantam Prep and Bantam Varsity). The CSSHL was specifically designed to enable like-minded players increased level of competition and exposure. The league’s mandate is to provide student-athletes with a high-level hockey experience that complements their academic commitments. Each team plays 24-30 league games, followed by playoffs to determine the final standings for the season. The games are scheduled on weekends to minimize school conflicts. Despite a relatively short existence, the CSSHL has already produced seven players selected in the National Hockey League draft, and two alumni who have competed in the NHL, including Mathew Dumba (Minnesota Wild) and Curtis Lazar (Ottawa Senators). More than sixty former players have gone on to play Major Junior hockey, while sixteen have earned scholarships to NCAA Division I programs. It is hoped that the Bantam program will debut in the CSSHL’s Bantam Prep division in 2015-16, once the Shawnigan Arena is completed. In addition to their CSSHL fixtures, the Varsity and Bantam teams also compete in a number of tournaments throughout the season of play. Long-term plans for the Hockey program include the addition of another Midget-aged side and the creation of a girls’ program, taking advantage of hockey’s growing prominence in female athletics.
