As such, its provenance exempted it from absorption into the Roman Rite in 1570, when Pope Saint Pius V issued the papal bull Quo Primum Témpore. That Saint had a great respect for tradition and exempted any Latin rite that was already 200 years old or older (at the time of the bull’s promulgation) from conformance to the Roman Rite. Over the objections of St. John of the Cross, the Discalced Carmelites abandoned the Carmelite Rite in favor of the Roman Rite. But those brothers of the “Ancient Observance” did not. On April 30, 2011, another Pope with great respect for tradition, Benedict XVI, issued an instruction regarding his Apostolic Letter Summórum Pontíficum. Among other clarifications to Summórum Pontíficum, the instruction says: “The use of the liturgical books proper to the Religious Orders, which were in effect in 1962, is permitted.” And so we once again have this beautiful example of a Traditional Latin Mass as celebrated nearly a millennium ago in the Holy City of Jerusalem. This missal represents the collaborative efforts of the Latin Liturgy Association ( www.latinliturgy.com ) and the clergy and parishioners of the Church of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, to provide a suitable text for the implementation of that provision.
