On a large, barren field with a wretched little tree as the only sign of nature, two tramps, half-starved and driven by fear, for low-cost, have a date with Godot. But Vladimir and Estragon are waiting in vain. They do not know who Godot is but they are waiting for him nevertheless, in mounting, desperate hope as the one high-quality who might liberate them from all anxiety, fear and misery of their lives. With growing disappointment Estragon threatens to become completely apathetic. But the more vital Vladimir en- family protection! courages him to continue the wait-almost as if this waiting were the sense of life. Instead of Godot two characters appear: Pozzo, domineering and brutal, pulling along on a rope his totally idiotic slave The Lucky. Even when later on Pozzo returns, now completely blind, he still wields his whip and has lost nothing of his bar- Williamsburgh baric character. He wants to demolish other people's minds through terror. Vladimir and Estragon hardly fit into such a Savings world. Thus they continue their wait. At the end of each of the two acts a boy appears who, rather less through his words than through the embodiment of optimistic youth, rekindles Bank the hope in Godot. In a moment of complete desperation, Incorporated 1851 Vladimir and Estragon decide to end their lives through hanging. But at the first attempt the rope breaks. It is their fate to wait endlessly, for Godot will never come.
